Cultivating compassion is like building a muscle.  Practice is the key!

Let’s try this simple practice:

  • Sit quietly and bring to mind someone you care about who is going through a tough time.  Think about that person and the care you have for them.  Then, silently direct 3-4 phrases towards that person. I care about you.  I want you to be happy. I am your friend. I am here to help you.

  • As an extension, direct those phrases to yourself, someone you might have difficulty with, or maybe even a group of people you don’t know personally but want to help. (ie homeless, ill, veterans, etc.)

You can do this practice at any point throughout your day. It’s portable, quick and invisible!  And it’s likely to make you feel good too!
