Norris TeamMates Named Southeast Nebraska Chapter of the Year

Norris TeamMates has been recognized as the Southeast Nebraska TeamMates Chapter of the Year, an honor that celebrates the chapter's outstanding growth, dedicated leadership, engaged board members, and unwavering commitment to supporting students through mentoring.

The Norris chapter has experienced remarkable growth over the past several years. Just two years ago, the chapter served 67 mentor-mentee matches. By the end of the 2025-2026 school year, that number had increased to an impressive 92 matches. Even more significant is the quality of those relationships, with mentors and mentees meeting an average of 23 times throughout the school year. These consistent interactions have fostered meaningful connections while providing encouragement, hope, and support for students across the district.

A key factor in the chapter's success is the leadership of coordinators Lenny Vermaas and MaryAnn Franken. Together, they have created an exceptional mentoring program by expertly matching mentors with students, providing thorough training, and offering ongoing support throughout each mentoring relationship. Vermaas brings contagious enthusiasm and ensures every mentor feels prepared and confident in their role. Franken has a remarkable ability to identify students who would benefit most from a caring adult mentor. Their teamwork has established a strong foundation that continues to drive the chapter's growth and success.

The Norris TeamMates Board has also played an instrumental role in earning this recognition. Board members work collaboratively to expand community awareness and recruit new mentors. One highlight was the chapter's community "Trick or Treat" event, where books featuring TeamMates labels were distributed to students to promote the organization's mission. Board members actively encourage others to "Join the Team. Be a Mentor." wherever they go—whether at school, church, local businesses, or throughout the community. Their enthusiasm has helped establish TeamMates as a respected and valued program within both the Norris community and the school district.

The chapter's commitment to communication and mentor appreciation further sets it apart. Monthly newsletters from Vermaas keep mentors informed, connected, and inspired, while coordinators consistently recognize milestones, celebrate new mentor matches, and express appreciation for every volunteer. Whether someone is beginning their first year as a mentor or has been serving for decades, each volunteer is made to feel valued and supported.

This recognition as the Southeast Nebraska Chapter of the Year reflects the dedication of Norris TeamMates' coordinators, board members, mentors, and community partners. Most importantly, it celebrates the positive impact these caring adults have on students every day. Through their commitment to building meaningful relationships, the Norris TeamMates chapter continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people and strengthen the Norris community.
