District Soccer: Lady Titans lose in semi-finals, Seniors hopes for State Dashed

The weather and the setting could not have been more beautiful for the semi-final round of district B-l girls soccer.  The lady Titans took on the Waverly Vikings. This was the 3rd meeting between the 2 teams since April 4th and April 26th.The six seniors on the varsity soccer team knew they had a tough match ahead of them.  During the basketball season, 4 of the six seniors experienced playing Gretna 3 times in the season, being defeated twice and then winning in districts when it counted.  "These seniors knew what was coming tonight since they've been there themselves. This group of seniors have been to state every year since their freshman year and were determined to get back for a fourth time," coach Myers said.In the first half of play, Waverly got on the scoreboard first with a Cierra Tjaden breakaway to goal just 3 minutes into the match.  The Titans hung tough and scored a goal just 15 minutes later when sophomore Brittany Funk passed the ball forward to senior Sam Areman who was able to dribble inside the box and crack off a shot past Waverly goal keeper Nicki Larsen. The score remained tied at halftime.  In the second half of play, the Titans outshot Waverly 11-6.  "We had our opportunities, and missed some pretty close range shots.  Waverly's goal keeper did a nice job as well," said coach Myers.  "A team like Waverly can be frustrating because there is no rhythm or flow to their attack.  They play hard and have some really quick kids, and if you are standing still, they are going to challenge you or beat you up the field.  I made some adjustments, but then we struggled to get the ball in the back of the net and establish our own rhythm."The game remained tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and through 2 overtime halves.  In the shoot out, the Titans won the toss and elected to shoot first. The Titans missed 2 of thier 5 penalty kicks, while Waverly scored on 4 of theirs ending the shoot out with a 4-3 point advantage.  Final score of the match was 2-1 Waverly.  Waverly (10-5) moves on to the finals against 5th ranked Lincoln Pius (10-6) in the finals at Nebraska City High School, Thursday, May 5th at 6:00 p.m."This was clearly a disappointing loss.  Our team is close and it is hard to send our seniors out this way.  It's been a wonderful season, and really it is about the journey and what you can take away from the wins and the losses."  The lady Titans would like to thank our fans, our families, our communities, and the Voice for their exceptional support and love through out the 2011 season.
