Titans “Hand” Trojans a Victory

In soccer, a hand ball is defined as deliberately playing the ball with one's hand or arm.   The key word is deliberately.  In today's game, most hand balls are not called because most are not deliberate; usually a ball glances off someone's hand or arm as they run when the ball is shot or kicked.  One place on the field that a hand ball will almost always be called is in the 18 yard box also known as the penalty box; deliberate or not.  Thus the demise of the Lady Titans in their 0-1 loss to the Platteview Trojans, Tuesday night. In the first half of play, the Norris Titans outplayed and outshot Platteview 18-0.  With wind gusts up to 35 mph, the Titans struggled to get a shot in goal. "I felt horrible for the girls.  They worked the ball beautifully through each third of the field and as we would get ready to attack, the ball would either fly by on a great pass on the ground or on a cross or even on the shot.  I can't even recall how many shots went just wide of goal or hit the goal post," said Coach Myers. In the second half of play, Platteview had the wind at their backs and had more opportunities to shoot.  They took advantage of the wind and the Trojan's Kate Petersen took some great shots above the 18 yard box.  However, the Titans out shot the Trojans 13-5.  "The goal keepers for both teams played great tonight in these types of conditions.  Lauren Kreifels for Platteview played tremendous.  She scooped up nearly everything we shot at her, when we shot on goal," Myers said. The last 3 minutes of the match was intense.  Brittany Cvitak collided with a Platteview player in the 18 yard box but niether got called for a foul.  However, Cvitak came out of it with a bloody nose and had to leave the field. With just 34 seconds left on the clock, one of the Platteview girls took a shot just above the 18 box into a crowd.  Defenders Jesse Taylor and Alex Mathers were centered at the top of the box.  When the player shot, the ball hit off another player and then hit Mathers in the arm off the deflection.  The official called a hand ball and Platteview got the penalty kick.  Melissa Stine took the kick for the Trojans and scored with a hard shot to the left of keeper Ashley Schroeder. The Titans never gave up.  With just 30 seconds left, the Titans drove down the field and a foul was committed just above the right of their penalty box.  Samantha Areman took the the freekick and placed a beautiful ball into the box, but no Titan got on the end of it to finish, because keeper Lauren Kriefels emerged from the crowd with a save.  "A person can look at this game and say that the match was determined in the last 34 seconds.  But our girls know that they had 79 minutes to score and did not accomplish that.  They will take this game and use what they learned from it to prepare for their game against Beatrice on Saturday." The Titans drop to 6-3 on the season while the Trojans improve to 7-2.  The Titans take on Beatrice on Saturday, April 17th at 2:00 and 4:00 in Beatrice.
