Norris District Embraces #BeKind Theme

Norris District Embraces #BeKind Theme

Tuesday, August 21, 2018
Norris is embracing districtwide the statewide #BeKind theme this year. We sincerely hope students and staff will take this theme and run with it! August 24th is #BeKind Day across the state, and Norris staff will be recognizing and affirming this day of kindness.

The #BeKind plan is simple: to encourage, affirm, and model behaviors that demonstrate kindness and compassion toward others. The origin of this initiative stems from Mark and Joni Adler (Mark is the Superintendent at Ralston) and their outreach in the wake of losing their son Reid Adler to suicide in January of 2016. In the aftermath of this tragic event, Mark and Joni learned that their son had been victimized by ongoing social media bullying.

The rollout of this campaign also coincides with increased concerns across the state about fan conduct at NSAA sanctioned HS events where taunts and demeaning slogans or slurs have detracted from the contest and targeted participants or other fans. Thus, #BeKind is also intended to emphasize being welcoming, hospitable, and inclusive of others in all settings. Norris has a longstanding tradition of sportsmanship and we want to continue to model this and to uphold the highest standards of positive conduct for students and spectators at our events.

At the August Board meeting, our Norris School Board adopted the  #BeKind resolution in advance of August 24 #BeKind day. A recent article from the Omaha World Herald provides more information and background on this initiative.

As a visible gesture of support and commitment to the #BeKind theme, the NE LOVES PS marketing team has produced #BeKind shirts exclusively for our #norristitans staff,

We hope all Norris students, staff and the broader Norris community will join us this year in embodying the #BeKind commitment!
