Boys soccer adds three more wins

This past week, the Norris boys soccer team picked up three more wins, increasing their record to 8-2 on the season.Tuesday night was the first of the matches, and the Titans traveled to Platteview to take on the 2-7 Trojans. Norris had the majority of shots on goal throughout the first half, but the Trojan goalkeeper was up to the challenge, denying the barrage of Titan attempts. However, after being taken down in the penalty box, senior captain Jared Zysset stepped up to the spot and found the back of the net. That goal remained the difference between the teams, as the Titans headed home with the victory. On Thursday, the boys headed to Gretna (5-4) to try and stay atop the conference rankings with a win. The match was mostly defensive, with few shot opportunities created by either team. At the end of scoreless regulation and overtime periods, the teams prepared to decide the match in a shoot out. Although both teams' shooters weren't able to put one home during the previous 100 minutes, the opposite was true from the penalty spot. The first five shooters ended in a deadlock, each side scoring four times, so the match moved into a sudden-death penalty shoot-out. A total of 10 players took their chances, and it came down to a save by Norris senior captain Jake Kuhn, followed by senior J.D. Areman making his shot to earn the win for the team.Knowing the previous two matches were too close for comfort, the Titans came out of the gates early against Beatrice (2-6) on Saturday afternoon. Less than four minutes into the match, Norris had already swarmed forward for two goals, then proceeded to add another two before the half ended. Beatrice's continued efforts produced a goal of their own, but Titans answered that with three more goals of their own for a final result of 7-1. Junior forward LaRoy Cobb added four goals to his season tally, with sophomore Ramiro Gonzalez adding two of his own. Senior captain Jordan Schaefer also chipped in a goal, and an assist. Jared Zysset also had two assists, along with one from J.D. Areman, senior John Hovendick, and Ramiro Gonzalez. The Titan defensive back line, anchored by senior Kyle Smith and flanked by seniors Chauncey Ziemann and Byron Oelling have been playing tough this season, and this game was no different.Next up for the Titans is a tough Waverly team. It will be the last conference game for the boys before rounding the regular season against Crete.
