Baseball field development meeting well-attended by patrons, parents

Monday, August 31, 2015

The Norris District held a public meeting in the auditorium on August 24. The stated purpose was, in the words of Superintendent Dr. Skretta, to “help the amazing Norris Titans baseball team build a baseball diamond here on our home campus!” The meeting was attended by approximately 40 members of the public and patrons of the district representing various levels of involvement in youth and Norris baseball in the community.

The district is targeting $250K in cash donations by August 1, 2016, which would mean construction commences Fall, 2016. Dr. Skretta provided information on the Facilities Fund Phase III project of a baseball diamond on campus and offered information about successful fundraising and cash and in-kind contributions which helped the district accomplish the turf field installation and the fitness center (strength and aerobics conditioning expansion) before it.

The meeting was attended by and included comments from Board members who are on the Ad Hoc Facilities Development Committee, Jim Craig and Craig Gana, both of whom are also donors to the Titans Facilities Fund.

Reasons to donate described included:

  • Create a competition field and practice place for Norris baseball on campus.

  • Create the facilities capacity to allow for Norris baseball program expansion.

  • Matching money: If fundraising targets are met, district will commit up to a $2:$1 match to complete the facility.

  • Be a part of a shared cost commitment following a well-established public-private partnership model. Fitness Center & Turf / Track project demonstrate this can be done!

  • Usher in the third phase of the Titans Facilities Fund to make sure the Titans’ facilities for activities not only measure up, but offer top quality venues for our student athletes and fans.

  • A tax-deductible donation to the Norris District can make our students’ ‘Field of Dreams’ a reality.

Field Development information that was shared at the meeting included:

  • Board of Education determines need and authorizes specifications for all building and grounds projects. The BOE undertook a comprehensive activities facilities development plan and detailed cost estimating in 2012.

  • District currently has an MOU with City of Hickman baseball facility for home games and practices 4th Friday in February through 3rd week in May.

  • District has and continues to partner with Hickman for Hickman Legion field maintenance and upkeep, including improvements. District would want to continue to use/access Legion Field even after developing an on-site baseball diamond.

  • Location of proposed baseball diamond will be south of Titans Stadium.

  • Detailed cost estimating for baseball diamond from design partner DLR was conducted as part of activities facility planning report August, 2012. Cost estimate was approximately $789K.

  • Key aspects of construction that must be considered as logically prior steps for field development include utilities extension for electrical capacity and irrigation.

  • Largest itemized cost on field construction is lighting.

  • The current specifications call for artificial turf and crumb rubber infield.

Donations to the Titans Facilities Fund to support baseball field development are being accepted and can be made out to the Norris District with memo line on check indicating Facilities Fund / baseball development. Donations are tax-deductible and can be submitted to the HS Athletic Director Greg Hardin. Individuals who wish to volunteer to assist in the fundraising effort for the Facilities Fund Phase III are welcome to contact AD Hardin or Superintendent Skretta at 402-791-0000.
