Titans 8th grade football defeats Waverly

The eighth grade Norris Titan football team triumphed in their first home game, taking on Waverly in a 12-6 victory last Tuesday.  The first score for the Titans resulted from a 17 yard run by Brody Zabel, set up by a fumble recovery by defensive back Thomas Sullivan.  The Vikings battled back before the half with an interception they converted to tie the score at six.

After both teams stalled on their first offensive series to start the second half, Norris punted and recovered a muff to set the Titans up for a fifteen yard touchdown run by Brody Zabel.  A strong defensive stand following the kickoff put the Titan offense at mid-field, but a bad exchange led to Waverly recovering the ball.  As the Vikings began to move the ball in the effort to take the lead, Norris' Austin Barber intercepted a pass and returned the ball fifteen yards to put the Titans back on offense with under four minutes of play remaining.  A sustained offensive series moved the ball to within five yards of the Viking endzone when time expired.

During the extra quarter, Dylan Lindstrom and Luis Ortiz scored touchdowns, and Garrison Gustin intercepted a Viking pass to end the Waverly drive.

Coaches Josh Murtaugh and Tim Dorn of the Titans communicated to the players how impressed they were with the team's improvement over the course of two weeks.  "They are coming along as individuals, and more importantly, as a team," said Murtaugh.

The 8th grade Titans will play their final home games on the next two Tuesdays where they will take on Plattsmouth and Platteview.
