Third grade students spend approximately 60 minutes each
day or 300 minutes per week on reading instruction and practice. The addition of other
language arts lessons such as writing and spelling skills increases this time. The third
grade program builds on the skills taught in the previous grades.
First
Quarter Objectives:
1. The
learner will identify plot, characters, and setting in a story.(4.1.3)
2. The
learner will identify and use prefixes and compound words. (4.1.7)
3. The
learner will alphabetize words to the third letter. (4.1.2)
4. The
learner will listening skills to gain comprehension.
Second Quarter
Objectives:
1. The
learner will recognize cause and effect relationships. (4.1.6)
2. The
learner will identify the main idea of a nonfiction paragraph. (4.1.3)
3. The
learner will find meanings of new words by locating words or root words in a
glossary or dictionary. ( 4.1.4)
4. The
learner will use context clues.
Third Quarter
Objectives:
1. The
learner will sequence events from a story at grade level. (4.1.3)
2. The
learner will write words with suffixes requiring spelling changes in the
base word.
Fourth Quarter
Objectives:
1. The
learner will distinguish fact from opinion.(4.1.7)
2. The
learner will compare forms of literature ( fantasy, historical fiction,
realistic fiction, biography, fable, autobiography). ( 4.1.5)
3. The
learner will identify similarities in characters and events across stories.
(4.1.6)
4. The
learner will locate names and telephone numbers in a telephone book. (4.1.4)
