Indian Hill at the Niobrara River homestead of Jules Sandoz is mentioned frequently in the book, Old Jules.  Jules would often practice marksmanship by aiming at a sandy spot on the hill.

"...the county judge decided upon a compromise of advice.

'You say you were n't shooting at Freese but at a sand spot on indian Hill?'

'I got four witnesses to prove it.'

'Let us say you have. Now whose land is this Indian Hill on?'

'On Freese's."

'Then have you the right to use it for a target range?'

'...I came into this country when nobody was living here and shot at the sand spot with the Indians." from Old Jules, by Mari Sandoz, pg.123-124,University of Nebraska Press, copyright 1935.

Jules Sandoz was a horticulturist and believed that the sandhills would make excellent farm ground.  He started many orchards and sold fruit to neighboring homesteaders.  These are a few of the original trees planted by the Sandoz family.
