This sculpture in front of the Mormon Trail Center shows a family
traveling with a hand cart. During the Mormon migration that began in 1847 these
carts were used by about 3,000 people on their trip to Salt Lake City. The carts
were less expensive than wagons with animals and more miles could be covered in one day. |
| Leaders got the idea for the carts from those used by street
sweepers in cities. They were about six to seven feet long and they could be pulled
or pushed, The carts could carry about 500 pounds of supplies. If you visit
the Mormon Trail Center, you can try pulling or pushing one.
