Classroom Guidelines

Classroom Information and Procedures for Mrs. Kernes’s English Classes

I.  Rules of Conduct

A.    Students are to treat each other with polite respect at all times in the classroom.

B.    Students are to be in their assigned seats with all necessary materials ready for the day's activities before the bell rings.  Necessary materials include an appropriate book to be read independently during times you are in between activities, or there is unused time at the end of the period.

C.   Water is permitted in the classroom, however it must be in a transparent water bottle only.  No cappuccino at all!!  Cappuccino should be consumed in MPR room only.  Food is okay as long as it’s discreet.  If it’s a nuisance then I will confiscate it.

*Gum is acceptable as long as I don’t see it or hear it.  Any infraction of these guidelines and the gum privilege will be revoked.

D.   Students must not converse with others in formal classroom situations only during classroom discussion times.

E.   Students must raise their hands and be recognized before speaking in formal classroom situations

F.    Students are not to leave the room after the bell rings unless there is an emergency.

G.    Students are not to leave their desks without permission.

H.  Tardies-You must be in the classroom to be considered "on time".  If you are late it is a 15 minute detention to be served after school.  If tardiness becomes a frequent problem then detention time will increase as needed, and contact with the parent/guardian will occur.

I.    Students must use designated “in class” study time appropriately.

No putting materials, books, independent reading, assignments etc. away before the bell rings

No working on assignments from other classes

1.      In addition, an inconvenience detention may be assigned for initial and/or repeated infractions of any of the preceding rules.  If the distracting behavior persists students will removed from the class.

2.      Inconvenience detentions are served after school of the following day in the detention room.   If students fail to serve an inconvenience detention, the number time will be doubled for each missed appointment.  If this continues, the matter will be turned over to the administration.

J.   All classroom policies are administered at the discretion of the teacher.  Any student with a question or concern may see me before or after school.

K. Cheating will not be tolerated.  Any student caught cheating will receive a zero for the first incident and fail the nine weeks for the second incident.  Plagiarism is cheating and will be dealt with in the same fashion.

II.  Proper Assignment Procedures

A.  All assignments must include the CORRECT heading as prescribed by the school wide heading procedure established by the administration.

1.  Student’s full name, teacher’s name, period and class, and date assignment is due must appear in the upper left hand corner of the paper.  Points will be taken off for infractions

2.      Exercise and page # in the left-hand margin for grammar assignments.

B.  All composition assignments must be typed on a word processor or typewriter.  There will be more information in the MLA guidelines packet.  Any composition assignment NOT typed will not be read. (In addition I prefer that daily grammar assignments be in dark blue or black pen.

               C.  All assignments must be on one side of the paper only.

 D.  All assignments must be stapled in the CORRECT order.  For example exercise # 1 is followed by exercise # 2.

             E.  All assignments must be written on loose-leaf or serrated lined paper.  NO FRIZZIES.

***** 1.  Five points reduction for failure to do each of the preceding procedures. Following assignment procedures is considered as part of the class participation grade for semester.

A.  It is a Norris administrative policy that there will be no proofreading or editing written assignments for students with assignments from other classes or teachers.

IV.  Submission Responsibilities

A.  It is the responsibility of the student to make up assignments and tests when absent.  The student has the number of days absent X 2 to make up the work.  Failure to make up the assignments or tests in the allotted time period will result in a grade of O.  All makeup work must be done outside of regular class time.

B.  All missing assignments must be placed in the IN BOX with an absence excuse written at the top of the page.

1.      Five point reduction for failure to do preceding procedures. Following submission responsibilities is considered part of class participation grade for the semester.
