9th Grade English Summer Accelerated Program

Students who are eligible to participate in this program have been contacted by the high school and invited to participate. 

-The summer curriculum pre-requisites must be completed in their entirety by the required deadline.  All requirements and checked out materials must be returned to the high school office before this deadline.


 

Required Reading list-

1.      Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare-In addition to reading the text in Adventures in Reading, student is responsible for completing and returning typed responses to the ‘Reading Check’ and ‘For Study and Discussion’ questions throughout the text.

2.      The Odyssey by Homer-In addition to reading the text in Adventures in Reading, student is responsible for completing and returning typed responses to the ‘Reading Check’ and ‘For Study and Discussion’ questions throughout the text.

3.      To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee- In addition to reading the novel students must complete the assigned study guide and turn it in.  The required study guide can be printed directly from here.  STUDY GUIDE

Poetry Project

Student will be required to complete an independent research project and power-point on types of poetry including definitions and examples of the following: Narrative, Lyrical, and Dramatic.
 

They should also be familiar with the following poetic devices and illustrate one example of each on the power-point:

*Alliteration, assonance, personification, rhyme scheme, onomatopoeia, simile, metaphor, symbolism, and tone. Power-point is due emailed to jamie.kernes@nsdtitans.org by July 12th and a hard copy should also be submitted by the deadline.

*In addition to reading these works students should have an understanding of literary strengths of each piece including but not limited to theme, setting, characterization, point of view, and historical backdrop for each piece of literature.

Textbooks Adventures in Reading and copies of To Kill a Mockingbird are available to check out from Norris High School for students.  Items will be available in the high school office.

 

Required Writing Assignment

*Students should complete a five paragraph essay comparison paper.  This paper should compare Romeo and Juliet compared to the musical West Side StoryStudents should be able to compare and contrast the two pieces in a paper with an effective introduction and conclusion utilizing the Six traits of writing, including an effective introduction and conclusion.  The comparison should focus either on comparing the characters between the two works OR the scenes in both plays.
