The Grading System

The grading system used at Norris Middle School for all courses is:

Excellent

Above Average

Average

Below Average

A+ = 98-100%

B+ = 89-91%

C+ = 80-82%

D+ = 71-73%

A = 95-97%

B = 86-88%

C = 77-79%

D = 68-70%

A- = 92-94%

B- = 83-85%

C- = 74-76%

D- = 65-67%

* Anything below 65% will be considered failing.

Grading will be determined by a combination of daily assignments, labs, quizzes, and unit tests. All daily assignments and labs will have a due date and any assignment or lab that is late or incomplete will automatically be worth half credit. Any late and/or missing assignments or labs may be turned in for half credit until the unit test for that particular assignment or lab. Most assignments and labs will be graded, but some assignments and labs will be recorded as a completion grade. In order to receive all of the points for a completion grade, the ENTIRE assignment or lab must be completed! If the assignment or lab is not entirely complete, the student will not receive any credit for that assignment or lab.  Unit tests will assess student knowledge of unit objectives and content through a combination of higher level questioning. The unit tests will be worth TWO TIMES the points available. The student will be allowed to retake exams as long as he/she continues to improve his/her grade with each retake. This shows that the student has taken time to review, study, and work to improve his/her work. The student will keep his/her highest grade on any test that is retaken, so it is encouraged for students to try to improve their work. Retakes will be allowed up until the next unit test. In other words, each and every student will have opportunities for success in this class!

Any assignment/test/project, etc. a student is caught cheating on will receive a zero.  Students learn best by doing their own work!

If a student has a 65% or below in Science, he/she will be added to the failing list for that particular week, and will NOT be allowed to participate in school activities and/or athletics until the grade is raised above failing. Students may ask about their grade in science before class, after class, during lunch, or during time in class when students are working on individual assignments if they are concerned about where they stand.
