"Booker T."
  • Booker T. (Taliaferro) Washington was born a slave in Hales Ford, VA near Roanoke in1856. After the U.S. government freed all slaves in 1865, his family moved to Malden, W.VA. There Washington  worked in coal mines and salt furnaces. He became an important black leader and educator. He was famous for founding the Tuskeegee Institute, a school for African Americans. He died in 1915.

  • He has two sisters. When he was young, he loved all sports. He was a very, very good kicker. That is how he got the nickname of Boomer. He became a professional football player when he grew up. He played quarterback for the New York Jets. He made over twenty-three touchdowns in one year! He is retired now.

  • He was born in 1809 and died in 1868. When he was 1 year old, his family moved to Brooms Lick, Missouri. As an adult he became a famous hunter, trapper and a guide. He even went on three trips with the explorer John Charles Fremont.

  • George was born in Alabama in 1864. When George Washington Carver was born, he had many things against him. He was a sick,  weak little baby. George worked hard for many years. He always was trying to save enough money for college. He made 300 different kinds of uses for peanuts. He died in 1943.

  • He was born a slave in 1818 in the south. His grandmother raised him because his parents died.
  • He became a famous writer. He started his own newspaper. He fought to free the slaves. He spoke about black people  having equal rights. He died at age 77 in 1895.

  •     Gertrude Ederle was born in 1906. She had a mother, father, brother, and sister. She swam the English Channel. She ate chicken in the ocean. She  was an Olympic swimmer.

"Thomas Edison was born in..."
  • Thomas Edison was born in 1847. His birthplace was in Milan, Ohio. He lived in Menlo Park, New  Jersey. He had one sister named Tannie. His middle name was Alva. He sold 1,000 newspapers in one day! His mother’s name was Nancy Edison. He invented the light bulb. He invented the electric vote recorder.He invented the film projector. In 1876 he moved to Menlo Park, N.J. That same year he improved the telephone by adding the carbon transmitter.  Edison’s invention of the phonograph in 1877 ranks as one of the world’s most original inventions. He died in 1931.

  •   Helen Lester is an author of kids’ books. When she was young, she wanted to be a teacher. She became a writer as an adult. Her first manuscripts were returned by the publisher. On her seventh try she got a book published. She is famous for writing books about a penguin named Tacky.

  • She was born in Los Angeles, California in 1958. She is half Mexican. She is a scientist. Her accomplishment is she was the first Hispanic woman to blast off into space. She took college classes for 23 years. Her favorite subjects in school were math and music.

  • She was born in 1887 on a farm in Wisconsin.
  • She had 4 sisters. At the age of 12, she told a friend she wanted to be an artist so she became an artist. She drew big pictures of flowers and skulls. She died in New Mexico in 1986.

  • Jesse Owens was born in 1913. He lived in Ohio. He had 8 brothers and sisters. His grandparents had been slaves. He won 4 gold medals in the Olympics for running. He was called the world’s fastest human. He led a band of Black musicians. He died in 1980.

  • Eleanor was born in 1884. When she was little she was afraid to swim. Eleanor married Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was crippled by polio and worked politically Eleanor was perhaps the most known and most beloved lady of the twentieth century.

  • Betsy Ross was born in 1752 . She was known as an expert seamstress. George Washington asked her to make the very first American flag. She died in  1836.

  • She was born in 1940.
  • She had polio when she was little. Wilma practiced walking as often as she could after that. When she was twelve years old, she could take her brace off for good. She was the fastest women in the world. She won three gold medals in the Olympics. She was a second grade teacher after the Olympics. She died in 1994.

  • She was born in 1954. She lived in West Virginia and Kent, Ohio. She has a mother, two grandparents, aunts, uncles, and lots of cousins. She became a writer and wrote a series of books called Henry and Mudge. She wrote lots of other books too. Cynthia received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975 from Morris Harvey College. In 1976 she received an M.A. in English from Marshall University. Then in 1982 she obtained a Master of Library Science from Kent State University. In 1993 she donated her manuscripts to the library at Kent State.

  • She was born in 1786. She’s an Indian. The chief was her brother. She met Americans. She was a guide and an interpreter. She had a  a husband and a daughter. She helped make a great difference in America. She died in 1884.

  • He was born in 1906. He had four brothers and two sisters. He became a famous baseball pitcher. He was the first African American elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He died in 1982.

  • He loved to draw. He had a family in California. He wanted his drawings in the yearbook. Charlie Brown was in the newspapers.

  • He was born March 2, 1904. He had a mom, dad and sister. When he was grown up he met Helen. In 1925, he went to Oxford University in England. Most of Dr. Seuss’s books are written in simple verses. His first book was And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, in 1937. The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins was written in 1938. How the Grinch Stole Christmas was written in 1957. He died in 1991.

  • She was born in 1925. She is a Native American. She lived in a cabin with her mom and dad as a child. She liked music and dancing. When she was young, she took lessons to get even better. She became a famous ballet dancer. She is still alive.

"Susan B."
  • Susan B. Anthony  was born in 1820. She lived in Adams, Massachusetts. She lived with eight brothers and sisters and a mom and dad. She became famous because she wanted men and woman to have equal rights. On Election Day Susan voted although it was against the law for a woman to vote . But she got arrested for voting. But her vote still counted. She died in 1906.
