- Booker T. (Taliaferro) Washington was born a slave in Hales Ford, VA
near Roanoke in1856. After the U.S. government freed all slaves in 1865,
his family moved to Malden, W.VA. There Washington worked in coal mines and salt
furnaces. He became an important black leader and educator. He was
famous for founding the Tuskeegee Institute, a school for African
Americans. He died in 1915.

- He has two sisters. When he was young, he loved all sports. He was a
very, very good kicker. That is how he got the nickname of Boomer. He
became a professional football player when he grew up. He played
quarterback for the New York Jets. He made over twenty-three touchdowns
in one year! He is retired now.

the light bulb. He invented the electric vote recorder.He invented the
film projector. In 1876 he moved to Menlo Park, N.J. That same year he
improved the telephone by adding the carbon transmitter. Edison’s invention of the phonograph
in 1877 ranks as one of the world’s most original inventions. He died in
1931.

- Helen Lester is an author of
kids’ books. When she was young, she wanted to be a teacher. She became
a writer as an adult. Her first manuscripts were returned by the
publisher. On her seventh try she got a book published. She is famous
for writing books about a penguin named Tacky.

She is a scientist. Her accomplishment is she was the first Hispanic
woman to blast off into space. She took college classes for 23 years.

Eleanor married Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was crippled by polio and
worked politically Eleanor was perhaps the most known and most beloved
lady of the twentieth century.

George Washington asked her to make the very first American flag. She

degree in 1975 from Morris Harvey College. In 1976 she received an M.A.
in English from Marshall University. Then in 1982 she obtained a Master
of Library Science from Kent State University. In 1993 she donated her
manuscripts to the library at Kent State.

with her mom and dad as a child. She liked music and dancing. When she
was young, she took lessons to get even better. She became a famous
ballet dancer. She is still alive.

- Susan B. Anthony was born in
1820. She lived in Adams, Massachusetts. She lived with eight brothers
and sisters and a mom and dad. She became famous because she wanted men
and woman to have equal rights. On Election Day Susan voted although it
was against the law for a woman to vote . But she got arrested for
voting. But her vote still counted. She died in 1906.
