Brain Warmup
All of these questions were answered during the last five minutes of the championship match between Norris and Lincoln Northeast at Saturday's Kickoff Quizbowl Tournament at Norris High on Saturday, September 27th.
1. Give the chemical element that has the same two-letter symol as the postal abbreviation for these U.S. states or territories: (a) Maryland, (b) Alabama, (c) California, (d) American Samoa, and (e) Colorado.
2. Given a list of characters, name the Dickens novel: (a) Abel Magwitch, Joe Gargery, b. Dora Spenlow, Mr. Wickfield, (c) Stryver, Alexander Manette
3. Answer the following about Jabba the Hut: (a). In Return of the Jedi, this irritating creature hangs about Jabba and laughs at all his jokes, but after he tampers with C-3P0 he is given an electrical shock by R2D2. (b) This unfortunate crony of Jabba is sent to bring in Han Solo at the Mos Eisley cantina, but is instead shot dead by him. (c) Also making his first appearance in the re-released Star Wars is this bounty hunter, who transports the carbonite-frozen Han Solo to Jabba in The Empire Strikes Back before being eaten by the sarlac in Return of the Jedi.

Norris A Team - Advanced Division Champions
The Norris A team got their year of to a flying start on Saturday, September 27th by winning the Norris Kickoff Tournament. The Titan quintet went through the entire tournament undefeated finishing the day with eight wins.
The tournament finals pitted Norris against the always powerful Lincoln Northeast team. In a see-saw match, Northeast lead early by scores of 70-10, 100-50, and 150-110 before the Titans caught them late in the match at 150-150. The last five minutes of the match was dominated by Norris who pulled away to win by the score of 230-180.
The champion team consisted of quizbowl veterans Jared Wiggins, Joel Keralis, and Evan Brunkow and relative newcomers Jon Herms and Derrick Sueverkruepp.
In the morning qualification round, Norris A beat Norfolk, LNE B, Creighton Prep, Bellevue East and Elkhorn. In the single-elimination afternoon tournament, they beat Council Bluffs TJ, Elkhorn and Lincoln Northeast A to finish a perfect day with the championship.
Norris B Team - Advanced Division
The Norris A team was not the only Norris team to excel during the tournament. The Norris B team did very well, going into the tournament as the fourth seed after winning four of six matches in the morning.
The Advanced Division Norris B team consisted of J.A. Clay, Adam Brazee, Jessalyn Schrock, and Thomas Winninger.
This team brought home wins over Blair B, Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson, Bellevue West, and Lincoln Northeast B, losing only to LNE A and Elkhorn, two of the four semi-finalists. Unfortunately, Bellevue West avenged their loss to the Titan B team in the quarterfinals to end their day.

Norris A Team - Novice Division Champions
The Norris A team had a great time at Saturday's tournament, winning the Novice Division. This team came out of the morning qualifier with a 4-2 record and the number one seed. During the morning rounds, the Norris A team beat Elkhorn, Bellevue West twice and Columbus Lakeview, losing to Blair and Bellevue West.
In the afternoon tournament, the Norris A Novice team beat Columbus Lakeview 120-40 and Elhorn 100-50 to take home the trophy and some T-shirts (modeled above).
The Norris A Team consisted of Andrea Wiggins, Andrew Keralis, Kyle Lococo and Shane Lowe.

Norris B Team - Novice Division Semifinalists
The Norris B Team had a very good day, finishing the pool play as the number two seed (behind only the Norris A team) and notching three wins on the day against three losses. The Norris B team had the highest points per match average of any team in the field.
The Titan B team had wins against Bellevue West (twice) and Columbus Lakeview, and lost to Elkhorn and Blair. They were eliminated in the semifinals of the afternoon tournament by Elkhorn.
The Norris B Team consisted of sophomore Eric Price, freshmen Evan Egger and eighth-graders Mark Pence and Cole Marolf (who squeezed both cross-country and a little quizbowl into his day).
