Extra Credit Ideas Basic philosophy on extra credit: it must be truly extra, not just more of the same stuff! Some possibilities: Map of the U.S.A. - why did the early founders make the states with boundaries the way they did? Why are some of them so small? Why do Florida and Oklahoma have such long, skinny panhandles instead of being part of another state? Why does Idaho go all the way up to Canada? Extra credit: redraw a map of the United States so that it makes more sense and the citizens have better access to their state capitals. Pascal's Pyramid - create a model of Pascal's Pyramid, a 3D version of Pascal's Triangle. Math Teacher as ..... - Make a video (up to 5 minutes in length) along the lines of "Math Teacher as ...." a certain occupation. For instance, "Math Teacher as Plumber" would have some shots with a plumber having a calculator, measuring pipes in scientific notation, making jokes about metric system, etc. "Math Teacher as Taxi Driver" could see a person get into the cab and the cabbie says, "Hey, what's the square root of 12?" or calculating the mileage in weird ways. Other occupations: cheerleader, bike racer, police officer, carpenter, plumber, electrician, sports caster, etc. Math facts and topics would be worked into a script and all the videos would be shown one day in math class. Calculate the cost of pouring a concrete pad for a greenhouse (after our measuring unit). Given the dimensions and the cost of the concrete, calculate and explain the price. Geometry: make one shape that will fit through all three simple geometric shapes. This "plug" will not only take up all the space of the shape but will pass through the shape as well. Sponges, balloons, or other shapeable material are not allowed; this must be a solid. Obviously you must turn the shape another direction for it to go through another shape. Make a PowerPoint presentation on some topic in math. Teach a section out of the book we will not cover or some other math topic that we will not cover. Include a handout. Make up a crossword puzzle (not a word search as I hate word searches!) using at least 15 words. Include the clues and an answer key. Read the book, "Math Curse", and write up your own version of this book. Do a section out of the book that we do not cover. Do all problems. Explain all answers. Watch a MathVantage movie we haven't seen and do a one page report on it. Do a report on a famous mathematician.
