The number "e" There is another special number given the name "e", which stands for Euler's constant. Leonhard Euler was a German? mathematician that worked in a lot of different branches of mathematics. e = lim (1 + 1/x ) ^ x (^ means exponent) For instance, if x = 2, then (1 + 1/2) ^ 2 gives us (1.5) ^ 2 , which is 2.25 If x = 4, then (1 + 1/4) ^ 4 gives us (1.25) ^ 4 , which is 2.4414... If x = 8, then (1 + 1/8) ^ 8 gives us (1.125) ^ 8, which is 2.5657... As you continue increasing the value for x, the number approaches a limit of 2.718281828...
The opposite of "e" is ln , otherwise known as natural logarithm. (last updated May 17, 1999) |
