Bulletin Boards

I truly believe that bulletin boards can not only convey information (announcements), decorate the room (fall, Christmas, etc.), but can, and SHOULD, also teach a new mathematical topic.

Mvc-002f.jpg (48126 bytes)  Each day the fractional part of the year is calculated. At the beginning of the day the new decimal, percent, and ratio are calculated and posted.

Mvc-006f.jpg (31766 bytes)  Outside my room is a major hallway.    For the first time this year,  I used it as a bulletin board!  So far I have put up only a couple of math ideas:

            5^2 means 5 x 5 = 25        and          10^0 is actually = 1

The goal is put up a big display (12" letters) that everyone will notice!  If enough people see it often enough, they will at least have a visual memory of the fact or idea!  Even the sixth graders, eighth graders, high school teachers, parents, and visitors will see it many times.

Other problems:

What is 10% of 45?                 How many minutes are in 5.2 hours?
