List of Norris students who have scored in the Top 50! 2007 Probe I Individual Test (team average): 1.
Omaha Skutt 57.75 Out of 24 class B teams. Top 12 scorers for Norris: Craig Price
58 One more question answered correctly by any of our top
four team Quiz Bowl results (double elimination): Lost to Omaha Skutt (4-3) 2006 Norris fell a little short today! The
Titans finished 3rd behind Omaha Duchense (85.5) and Seward (84.25). Seniors: Andrew Keralis, Shane
Lowe, Alex Baruth, Kyle Lococo, Brian Hage, Joe Bizal, Melanie Severin, Serena
Fosler, Deanna Cheney, Gabe Williamson, Pierre VanParijs
The Three-Peat is
complete! Norris' top four students scored an average of 68.50 on the
Probe I test to
outdistance Omaha Skutt (66) and Seward (63.25). Norris would have
placed 10th overall, no matter what class. In class A, we would have
placed 9th, as Elkhorn Mount Michael (74) was the only class C school with a higher
team score. The top class A team was Lincoln East (86.20). Top 4 scorers for Norris: Erik Nelson 75, Justin Popek 69, Eric Price 67, Spencer Hall 63. Justin Popek came out of nowhere to place second for the team as this was the first UNL contest he has ever participated in. Erik Nelson placed in the top 50 for the second time in his math career and 10th overall!. Our second group of four: Andrew Keralis (62), Nathan Moser (62), Shane Lowe (61), Craig Price (55) would have actually placed 4th in class B. Erik Nelson made
history as well. He is the first Norris student to place in the top 10!
In the Probe I contest, he was tied for 25th, but he turned in a fantastic
performance in the Probe II test to finish 10th overall. And he won a
scholarship of $2,000 for his efforts! Besides that, he anchored the Quiz
Bowl team, so by the end of the day he was a tired math boy! We were #1 again! A coach's dream! Norris scored 58.25 as a team score to win class B. Omaha Skutt was second with 52.5 and Syracuse was third (48.75). Norris would have placed 7th overall, in any class. The top 4 students were Mark Onwiler (63), Andrew Keralis (60), Tanner Moormeier (55), and Erik Nelson (55). To show the depth of our squad, the next set of four scores would have actually placed third at this contest: Ben Hage (53), Shane Lowe (50), Matthew Troupe (50), and Aaron Steele (48). And what's even more interesting .... is that we won the Quiz Bowl competition as well! Mark Onwiler, Matthew Troupe, Ben Hage, Tanner Moormeier, and Aaron Steele went 7-1 to claim the championship (first time ever for Norris!). They defeated Omaha Mercy, Omaha Skutt, Plattsmouth, lost to Kearney Catholic, Omaha Skutt again, then eliminated Ashland-Greenwood to get to the finals. They had to beat Kearney Catholic twice in the finals in front of the entire audience. Mark Onwiler and Matthew Troupe were on a roll and we claimed the winner's trophy!
We were #1!!! Norris beat out all other class B schools to claim first place in the PROBE I test. We had 3 students in the top 50 ( a record for Norris): Evan Brunkow (19th), Matthew Troupe (32nd), and Erik Nelson (50th). Mark Onwiler and Ben Hage almost made the cut for the top 50 spots. The team score (average of 62 on top 4 scores) placed us 6th for the entire contest, behind Lincoln East (87.4), Omaha Creighton Prep (74.2), Omaha Westside (68), Lincoln Southeast (65), and Omaha North (62.4). The Quiz Bowl team lost in the first round to Omaha Gross, then beat Waverly, and was eliminated by Centennial. Twenty-five Norris students participated in the day.
One Question Separates Norris from 1st! Thirty-eight Norris math students went to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Math contest on Thursday, November 14th, and placed 2nd in class B. There were around 1,300 students from 105 schools from all across the state competing in 4 different classes. Leading the way were two sophomores, Mark Onwiler and Matthew Troupe. Mark is only the fourth Norris student to break the top 50 group, and he is the first Norris sophomore to break the top 50 (all the others were seniors). It took a score of 66 to make it to the PROBE II test. The other top scorers were James Miller (61), John Miller (59), and Tanner Moormeier (59). The written test is 25 questions, multiple choice, with 4 points for each problem correct , 1 point if it is left blank, and 0 points if it is guessed and missed. The questions are from all parts of mathematics, but one key to the test is that calculators may not be used. If any of the top four scorers for Norris would have gotten one more question right, our team would have won the class B championship! In the quiz Bowl section of the day, Norris handily defeated Beatrice 6-1 in the opening round, then crushed Omaha Skutt 9-0 in the second round. After lunch, the team hit a slump as Schuyler defeated us 5-2 and then Plattsmouth eliminated us 6-4. The Norris quiz bowl contestants were James Miller, John Miller, Mark Egger, Jake Schmidt, and Mark Onwiler. Of the top ten scorers, three were seniors, two juniors, three sophomores, and two freshmen, thus next year Norris should be right in the hunt again for a championship. Student Score Rank (all students listed below are in top 50% of the contest) 1. Mark Onwiler 70
52 Norris placed 5th out of about 20 schools. Top scorers: James Miller 63, Jake Schmidt 63, John Miller 60, Mark Egger 51 (all juniors). One more question would have been answered correctly by any of our top four scorers, we would have been 4th! If the top four scorers could have correctly answered one more question each, we would have been second. Close competition! In the Quiz Bowl part of the day, the team of James Miller, John Miller, Julie Brandt, Bob Kubicek, and Brian Lococo had a record of 2-2. They beat McCook 5-0 in the first round, lost to Seward 3-7 in the second, beat Seward #2 in the third round 5-0, then lost 5-6 to Broken Bow in a tie-breaker (we were ahead 5-4 with one question left!). Top class B schools:
