Teacher Materials

The following topics will be slowly developed as the files are edited and transferred to this web site.  Anything that I have developed may be used without my permission.   The goal is stimulate mathematical thought and better ways to teach mathematics at all levels. (Listed in alphabetical order).

General Educational Philosophy - How do I look at the educational process?  It's actually pretty simple.

Bulletin boards and displays  -  a look at how bulletin boards can teach or convey mathematical information.

Calculators      the TI-73 calculator and programs to use on the calculator.

Classic problems -  mathematical problems that I think EVERY U.S. student should see and tackle sometime before they leave high school.

Cooperative Learning   

Extra Credit  What can students do for extra credit?  It's always been a challenge to figure this out, but here are some ideas.

Fibonacci Numbers - see an inclass problem you can amaze your students with!

Fractions - How do you add, subtract, multiply, or divide fractions?  Here's one explanation that might help.  Also, see a                     PowerPoint presentation with the four basic operations.

Fractions Festival -  First ever festival to celebrate fractions in an unusual way.

Integration     want integrated activities?   Check out the whale project, business unit, puffmobile, making home made ice cream, planets, and others.

Lego Logo      

Logic Puzzles - several mysteries that students ask yes/no questions to solve. 

Logo   the computer programming language for children.   Seventh graders take a 6 week course.           

MathVantage   a special project of videos and print material for grades 6-9 developed by Nebraska math teachers and distributed by Sunburst Communications and Great Plains.

Mental Math   see an example of a 20 question mental math exercise for 7th graders.       

Metric Measurement   frustrated at having to teach two systems?  Would you like the US to go entirely metric?                 

Overhead Puzzles - various puzzles that challenge the minds of students

Parent-Teachers Conferences - look at some handouts given to parents at parent-teacher conferences, kind of a report card.

Patterns

Polyhedra   a variety of 3D geometric solids made out of poster board.  Patterns, hints,  and directions will be provided in the future.

Quilt Project  we made a regular quilt for three years running, but now just do a paper quilt to hang in the hallway.

Quotes - variety of educational quotes about math or whatever

Saving Money   How much will you have at retirement if you save $1 a day?  Check it out. 

Student Teachers

Suncatchers      miniature stained glass artwork for middle school students.

Tessellations   see some student artwork concerning neat geometric patterns   

Web Sites    some math sites of various colleges, organizations, etc.

Whale    see some digital photographs of making a model of the largest animal that has probably EVER lived: the great blue whale.         

Zero and One   a collection of some interesting thoughts about zero and one.
