The team of Sam Murray, Connor Johnston, Trevor Hohbein, and Terrill Murray took home the gold medal at the first annual State Fair Lego Mindstorms RCX programming contest.  Kevin Kramer, Program Manager for the 4-H Youth Development through UNL, put together the first competition for middle school students from across the state.  Dr. Bradley Barker, 4-H Science and Technology specialist, was also on hand to help the teams.  Both men have BIG plans for Nebraska and the use of robotics, GPS, and GIS systems over the next few years.
The team had 3 hours to build the robot (from a kit) and program it to maneuver around 4 bottles of water in a criss-cross pattern.  It didn't take long to build the robot, so most of the time was spent adjusting the commands so that it would make the turns.  The more bottles the robot was actually able to go around, the more points the team would receive.  At noon all the students had to go eat lunch at the State Fair food booths, and at 1 o'clock all the teams came back for the actual competition.  Note:  Sam will be getting his medal later as they were missing one.
