Omaha Central High School Math Contest

2006

Six Norris students competed in the Omaha Central High School Math Contest on Thursday, October 12th.  There were 15 schools (besides Norris) at the contest:  Lincoln East, Omaha North, Millard North, Omaha Westside, Omaha Brownell-Talbot, Omaha Skutt Catholic, Omaha Central, Bellevue West, Bellevue East, Omaha Burke, Lincoln SouthWest, Omaha Westside, and two schools from Des Moines.

In the individual contest (25 questions), Craig Price placed the best (9th) out of 16 sophomores.  Shane Lowe (15th) and Andrew Keralis (16th) competed against 28 other seniors.  As a second part of the contest, teams of 3 answered three sets of questions.  Our teams didn't quite like this part of the contest (as evidenced by their scores).

Overall, this is a very tough contest with all the Lincoln, Omaha, and Des Moines schools.  However, we usually fare better.  "Coach" will have to figure out a better game plan for the UNL contest on November 9th.

Sorry, Shane, Andrew, & Joe.

I took a picture of the floor instead of you.

2005

For the first time, Norris High School traveled to Omaha October 13th for the Central Math Contest.  There were 15 schools at the contest, including the Lincoln schools of  East, Southwest, Northeast, the Omaha schools of  Westside, North, Brownell-Talbot, Burke, Central, Skutt, Duchesne, Benson, and  Northwest, and the Bellevue schools of East & West.
The team placed 7th out of 15 schools.  The team score was a total of the individual test scores and a team problem solving score.  The lone senior making the trip was Eric Price, who picked up a 5th place ribbon against 36 other seniors.  Juniors Andrew Keralis (10th), Shane Lowe, Brian Hage, and Joe Bizal also competed.  Freshman Craig  Price matched his brother's place by also taking home a 5th place ribbon against 8 other freshmen.
The individual test was a variety of 25 questions worth 4 points each.  If a question was left blank, the student received one point, but if the answer was wrong, no points were given.  The team problem solving competition had 1 question worth 1 point, then the second question worth 2, third one worth 3, etc. all the way up to 15 points.  Each team solved one question at a time (or tried solving!) before receiving the next question from an Omaha Central math teacher.
Overall team scores:  Lincoln East 301, Omaha Westside 280, Omaha North 236, Brownell-Talbot 230, Omaha Burke 228, Bellevue West 204, Norris 197.
