MathCounts

Omaha Central Math Contests

MathCounts is a national competition for 7th and 8th graders.  It started in 1984.
Mrs. Field is in charge of the Norris MathCounts team.  In October, any interested middle school student (6th, 7th, or 8th grade, male or female)  may practice after school about once every two weeks (schedule given in the daily middle school bulletin).  In January the practices move up to once a week.  By the end of January a team (usually four 8th grade students) and four alternates (usually 7th graders) are selected.  The competition involves three parts.  A 40 question test is to be done in 30 minutes.  The Target round is 2 questions at a time in 6 minutes, with a total of 8 problems given.  The team round has 10 questions for all 4 team members to work on.

The 2007 team of Evan Ehmen, Matthew Gutzmer, Jessica Stephenson, and Trevor Hohbein finished 3rd at the SouthEast regional comepetition at the UNL East Campus Union on Saturday, February 17th.  The contest was won by Lincoln Lux followed by Lincoln’s Scott Middle School.  Lincoln Lux had 7 of the top 10 scorers!  Evan Ehmen placed 20th, Matthew Gutzmer 23rd, Trevor Hohbein 31st and Jessica Stephenson 51st.  Also participating were Janessa Onwiler, Kristina Price, and Elizabeth Boender.  There were 17 schools and about 95 students in this very competitive program.
