Doane Math Contest

Doane College in Crete, Nebraska has a math contest every fall for high school students.

September 27th, 2007

Norris had to compete with all the big schools this year at the Doane College Math Contest, thus they came in 8th out of eight teams.  Other teams in our division were Lincoln East, Lincoln Pius, Lincoln Northeast, Lincoln Southeast, Omaha Central, Bellevue East, and Bellevue West.  The team scores were kept (but not shared with the sponsors).  How close were we to 7th place?  Only the Doane faculty members know!  The overall winner was Lincoln East, the dominant math high school in the state of Nebraska.
Competing for Norris were seniors Emily Derks and Curtis Richards, juniors Craig Price, Cody Bodfield, Caleb Boender,  sophomores Anneliese Madison, James Verhoeff, and eighth grader Austin Walker.
Our top scorer on the individual, multiple-choice test was Craig Price (22nd place out of 54), followed by Emily Derks (25th) and Curtis Richards (38th).  Two teams also competed in the Extreme Team Challenge:  Emily, Curtis, and Craig;  Caleb, Cody, and James.
In the quiz bowl competition, Norris had to face Lincoln East, and thus we were eliminated in the first round.  The sponsor for the day was Nancy Price.

The Norris team captured second place!  This year Omaha's Brownell-Talbot (class C private school in Omaha) competed and dethroned the Titans!  Thayer Central was third.  Norris students:  (seniors)  Shane Lowe, Andrew Keralis, Alex Baruth, Brian Hage, Joe Bizal, Pierre VanParijs, Gabe Williamson, and (sophomore) Craig Price.

On the written exam, Andrew Keralis placed third (behind 2 Brownell-Talbot students, actually 3 as there was a tie for 1st place).  The written test had 30 multiple choice questions.  Final places (individually):  Andrew (4th), Craig (9th), Alex (16th), Shane (17th), Joe (20th), Pierre (tied for 25th).  There were 56 competitors.

On the Extreme Team Challenge, the team of Andrew Keralis, Shane Lowe, and Alex Baruth placed 3rd behind Thayer Central and Brownell-Talbot.  Teams of students had to go around the Doane campus answering questions made up by the Doane math faculty.

At the Quiz Bowl tournament, Norris defeated Crete 4-2, then Falls City 6-2, then was defeated by Brownell-Talbot 7-5 in the championship.  In that last game, every question (all 7) were answered correctly by one of the two teams.  Norris was ahead 5 to 4 with one question to go, but the last question was worth 3 points.  Andrew Keralis and Shane Lowe were in high gear and were very close to answering the last question.  Final question:  what is the square root of 4,356?  (without a calculator, please).

There were 8 teams in our division:  Brownell-Talbot, Crete, Deshler, Falls City, Harvard, Thayer Central, Waverly, and Norris.
