How Grades Are Calculated
There are a variety of ways
teachers can arrive at a percent for a student's average.
Here are some helpful hints:
1. At the beginning of any
quarter, a bad grade (let's say a "zero" on a daily paper) can
make an average really low. If
there are only two or three grades in the grade book,
one low paper REALLY affects the
average. Should a parent be alarmed? Not really,
unless of course the previous quarter
(or year) was poor also. Most teachers take
a variety of grades and enough grades
over the course of a quarter that the low grades
and the high grades will "average"
out.
2. Hopefully teachers won't put a student on the
fail list after only two or three grades.
That's just not enough
data to make the average accurate.
3. Here at Norris, teachers can
grade by total points or by weighting certain grades more.
