Goals of Norris Preschool

We have the same goals for all children who attend Preschool.  Through daily routines and activities, we work to help children:

·         Learn independence and self-confidence by treating them as responsible, contributing members of the classroom

·         Become independent problem solvers

·         Develop the ability to make choices and follow through with their choices

·         Learn how to get along and play with others

·         Learn to appropriately express and manage their feelings

·         Develop a sense of self by understanding their own physical characteristics, as well as their unique likes, dislikes, and abilities

·         Learn to respect others’ physical differences, likes, dislikes, and abilities

·         Develop physical skills so that they can participate in a variety of movement activities

·         Learn to express themselves through music, movement, art, and dramatic play

·         Learn to observe and make comparisons between objects, events, sounds, and experiences in their world

·         Learn to communicate their wants and needs, thoughts, ideas, and feelings

·         Learn to understand the wants and needs, thoughts, ideas, and feelings communicated by others

·         Develop initiative, curiosity and persistence in learning about the world by participating in experiences that are interesting and meaningful

·         Develop literacy skills to understand and produce written messages—including drawings, symbols, letters, and words—in their environment

·         Develop an appreciation for books and an understanding of how books tell a story through words and pictures

·         Learn “school skills” such as following directions and routines, and participating and cooperating in group activities

·         Develop a foundation for later learning by participating in a variety of early math and literacy experiences
