National Standards for Music Education

The Music Department at Norris School District uses the National Standards for Music Education as the cornerstone of our curriculum for music instruction in the district. The primary aim of classroom instruction is to increase the students’ skills and knowledge in these areas. These standards are:

1. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
3. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
4. Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines.
5. Reading and notating music.
6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
7. Evaluating music and music performances.
8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
9. Understanding music in relation to history and culture.

Ever wonder what the current (or even former) 2008 presidential candidates feel about the arts and music? SBO Magazine presents this article with that question to several candidates. It's a good read!

The dates for the 2008 Marching Titans Band Camp have been posted. Please mark your calendars for July 28 - August 1 for pre-camp (guard, drumline, and drum majors) and for August 4 - 8 for full camp (everyone). Please schedule family vacations around this date as attendance of the camp is vitally important! Thank you.

Check out the Music Blog (just recently updated 5-5-08)...this is a new page we've added to help keep you up to date as to happening in the music department. This site will (hopefully) get updated on a regular basis.

Thank you for supporting the arts at Norris High School!
