  • grammarly.com Is a great site for checking grammar, plagiarism, and more.  Not free, but well worth the cost for several to use.
  • Power Proofreading-- a great game-like site for Grades 2-12 for practicing proof reading skills. Younger Readers.
  • Witty Comics is a great site for kids to create their own cartoon strip. Free, fun, and great for creativity. Also check out http://www.toondoo.com/ , http://comiqs.com/ , http://pixton.com (Cost:  Free—you must register) Bitstrips (Cost:  Free—you must register) and Web Comic Strip Creator - Chogger.
  • http://blabberize.com/ a cool site to create your own talking picture.
  • PaperRater is a great free resource to check grammer, spelling, plagiarism detection and more.
  • Awesome Stories web site maintains a site consisting of a variety of informational stories.
  • A great Children's Literature site lists authors and illustrators on the web.
  • Author and Illustrators - Find out more about your favorite author or illustrator.
  • Nice site with links to Reading resources. Younger Readers.

  • KidAuthors.com provides a nice site for students to safely publish their work. http://www.kidauthors.com/
  • Put in your words and this site makes a 3-line handwriting practice worksheet for you! (For Lower Elementary use.)
  • Nice site for Elementary for creating tracing paper for writing letters, etc...
  • Grammar slammer is a great English resource.
  • As a communications teacher sometimes it is tricky to find tangible sites that tie directly to curriculum. If you ever have another Drama teacher direct them to this site! Unbelievable for accents and dialect of English.  http://web.ku.edu/idea/
  • Spellingcity.com is an excellent site for spelling bee preparation. Also includes a great "Teach Me" function that spells out the word using visual and auditory input to improve retention.
  • Common errors in the English Useage. http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/errors.html
  • Diigo, allows you to annotate, archive, bookmarks, and organize web sites.  Has a toolbar for assisting with this too.
  • Mixbook's education program allows for creating online books for free. (Recommended by other educators. Similar sites like Shutterfly will do the same thing too.)
  • Plagium - paste in text and check for plagiarism
  • Readability- This fantastic tool allows you to capture ONLY the text from a website, getting rid of the clutter! (Works on pages with articles, does not work well on some home pages.) Also PDFmyURL.com is a nice tool for turning a web site into a pdf file.  Put both of these on your favorite bar for some great tools.
  • Voice Thread: http://www.voicethread.com ~ online media album, sometimes called a “group audio blog.”  Can contain a variety of media, such as images, documents, videos or a presentation.  Viewers can comment in different ways - voice, text, MP3 file, or webcam video.  VoiceThread videos can be exported to a movie for offline use on a DVD or video-enabled MP3 player.  Handout on Voice Thread Voice Thread at PLV.doc

  • Book adventure encourages reading (K-8) by allowing student to make a personalized reading list (out of more than 4000 titles) and then provides a quiz about each book the student has chosen.
  • http://librophile.com/ has a lot of free audio books available.
  • Myths and Legends. This site is for pupils, teachers and all those who enjoy stories and storytelling.

  • Barnes and Noble's TikaTok site allows kids to create some online books.

  • Little Bird Tales is a nice site intended for younger students to use to create digital stories. Little Bird Tales walks users through each step of creating a multimedia story. Users can upload images, draw images, or record from their webcams. Stories can be written with text or narrated by students using microphones connected to their computers.   • "...kids have always loved reading to each other and are transfixed when other children read them stories. They are also obsessed with the internet and will make their way to youtube any time they get their hands on a computer.We thought a website that had a continuous flow of new stories, read aloud by kids, would make a healthier destination than so much of the stuff out there."  You can use this site for enjoyment-kids listening to other kids read (they have really cute accents too). Or, you can have kids create their own smories to share with parents and families, on your website, or with students next year.
  • Story Book Jumper: http://www.storyjumper.com/ Create a book on-line that can be viewed, printed or ordered by parents.
