Finding information on the web: Using the Norris Searching links page, we will look at how to find information on the web. Each participant will evaluate one of the search resources and present their findings to the class. Remember... not all information on the web is good information. -- A short side step... A cause we should all be concerned about! Searching the internet for educational information to use in class-- Norris Searching Page. Discussion on teacher home pages and how to get your information on the web for students to use.
Daily Activity: Developing a Web/Worksheet with Hyperlinks for a classroom activity using Microsoft Word. Utilize a variety of searching resources to find educational information on the Internet. Each class participant will sign up for an account on the ikkepbookmarks site or the Mybookmarks site and utilize that sight to share bookmarks. Example Web worksheet --The American Presidents (example without hyperlinks) can be downloaded here. Using HPR*TEC's Web Worksheet Wizard to get classroom worksheets and information on the Internet. Using Project Poster by HPR*TEC to have your students post information, projects, presentations and assignments on the Internet. OR... you can use this service which is very similar and free as well: Filamentality is a fill-in-the-blank interactive Web site that guides you through picking a topic, searching the Web, gathering good Internet sites, and turning Web resources into activities appropriate for learners. ************************************************************ Fact Monster is a fun resource for kids Shodor Interactive Math Activities Power Proof Reading is a great tool for English skills by grade level (Gr 2-8...but could be used in higher grades.) (Need flash player installed... it is under your start menu under Internet.) Spellingcity.com is an excellent site for spelling bee preparation. Also includes a great "Teach Me" function that spells out the word using visual and auditory input to improve retention.

Developing online quizzes: Discovery Schools Quiz Center A great free quizzing tool. Lets look at some sample quizzes. Or a sample Quiz noel created. (Free site) Also has several other nice tools! Quia's site offers online quizzes and games. (There is a subscription fee each year. $49/yr.) Noel's sample site: Quia's site Take a look at a sample page. Try our Norris Staff Challenge Game or a sample multiple choice quiz. Quia survey developed by ESU5. (All have been Developed on Quia.) There are There are many activities that are available for free. Funbrain offers some nice free materials as well as online quizzing. (There is a subscription fee for the Quizlab section.$49/yr.) There are many activities that are available for free. Quiz Star offers a online quizzing site. (Used to be free, but now charges a small fee.- $30/yr.) ThatQuiz is a free site where you can create quizzes, add classes and students. Not as fancy as some, but free. It does have a lot of free, pre-made math quizes. (Phil Severson in our MS uses this site!) Smile is a site that allows free on-line Quizes and activities to be made. (Free- Michigan State University maintains this site!) Quizbuilder Offers a nice online quiz feature where it builds the HTML Code for you to insert into your web page. ESU5 has a nice page with online-quizzing resources and examples. ************************************************************ Learn how to store and edit photos online. Here is a list of available resources. ************************************************************ Daily Activity: Class participants share a web resource or link with other staff members. Each class participant will create an account on Discovery Schools Quiz Center and create an on-line quiz.
Wednesdays Topics Links and discussions:
************************************************************ How stuff works - This site has answers to the more general questions like "How does a CD-Player work?" It also has quite a few pictures. How things work - This site, Hosted by the University of Virginia, this page answers lots of specific questions about all kinds of devices in an easy understandable way. BrainPop-- Has small flash-like movies explaining many topics. (Great for Younger kids.) (Small fee to see all movies....but some free ones are still available.) The Visible Human Project A nice anatomy site!
Tech Topics....

Ever wonder about this stuff? Well, TechTopics is here is bring it all together
for you. We started with a bunch of cool exhibits from TheTech, found links to
other places, and created activities and projects to help explain things. Now
you can explore science right at your desk! They also have
some other great online tools
and exhibits. Putting your classroom or activities calendar online: All of these sites are free resources: Teach-ology offers a nice online calendar for posting your class activities and assignments. (This is my favorite calendar site for K-8 teachers! It has a young student look to it.) Take a look at my Sample Calendar. The calendars net site also offers some nice free calendar services. Google calendars offers a nice free calendar site. This site also allows you to import your calendar items from an export file from Outlook or other calendar programs. It will even call you to remind you of an event!
PowerMediaPlus is
a similar site. These videos are available to all ESU 4-5-6 schools free
of charge. (Fee is paid by the ESU.) Contact your media
specialist or technology coordinator to get a log-in. Handout on converting Youtube and other Flash videos to video files. TED.COM Check out the video on the new touch screen technology... or how to make a touch screen from a Wii Remote..... along with many other interesting topics. ************************************************************ Daily Activity: Developing Web pages and activities using the Hot Potatoes Software -- Hot potato page Class participants will place a classroom calendar on the Internet using one of the online calendar sites. TerraServer: Microsoft's astonishing rich collection of aerial and satellite images of places on earth (Other mapping and Geography links are on our Norris Geography Page.) The CIA World Fact Book has a wealth of information on countries and excellent maps. Discovery Works -- Has some nice science links and virtual fieldtrips. Pete's PowerPoint Station --One of the best for Great PowerPoints already made for you! A five star site!!! A great sign language site! It even shows you how to sign using video clips!
