These links are setup as a part of a five day exploration of what resources are available on the Internet and how to integrate those resources within the classroom.

Note: All of these links can be found on our pages located within the links area on the Norris Home Page.  I have compiled these here is a systematic order with a variety of topics to "wet the taste" for what resources are available for educators on the Internet.

The National Center for Education Statistics has a great classroom resource site.

Enchanted Learning's Picture Dictionary is nice for K-5 kids.  (Some items on Enchanted learning are for subscribers only, and some are free.) (At Norris we are a subscriber.)www.enchantedlearning.com

Great activity site for young Readers (K-2)

Great site for Anatomy from the University of Minnesota, the Google Body site or even a Neuroscience for Kids site:  http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/neurok.html

TVO Kids has a great site with over 100 online educational games. (K-4 age level)

Word Cloud sites:
Wordlle.net is a nice site for making posters from a text that pulls the main themes and concepts from that text.  OR  ImageChef: http://www.imagechef.comat this site, students and teachers can create a number if imagery examples with and without words.  Awesome.  (Try the Word Mosaic) ORhttp://www.tagxedo.com/ makes some great word clouds.

Book marking and keeping track of web sites you visit  A couple of optional sites for keeping track of your book marks and sharing your book marks with others include:

  •  iKeepBookmarks allows you to upload, and keep, your bookmarks on the web. You can access them at any time, from any computer... anywhere! Mybookmarks is another option for the same type of service. And they're both still free
  • http://del.icio.us/  Delicious is a very popular newer bookmarking site. (Requires a Yahoo ID -Free) Add a quick bookmark link here: http://delicious.com/help/bookmarklets  (No longer owned by Yahoo so not recommended anymore.) 
  • You can sync your Google Chrome Bookmarks, extensions and other settings from anywhere. Find out how.
  • Probably the best one: Diigo  You can also add a Chrome Extension for Diigo.

Possible Daily Activities:

Developing a Web/Worksheet with Hyperlinks for a classroom activity using Microsoft Word.

Utilize a variety of searching resources to find educational information on the Internet.

Each class participant will sign up for an account on the Diigo, ikkepbookmarks site,  Delicious or the Mybookmarks site and utilize that sight to share bookmarks.

Example Web worksheet --The American Presidents (example without hyperlinks) can be downloaded here.

Using HPR*TEC's Web Worksheet Wizard to get classroom worksheets and information on the Internet.

Using Project Poster by HPR*TEC to have your students post information, projects, presentations and assignments on the Internet.

OR... you can use this service which is very similar and free as well:

Filamentality is a fill-in-the-blank interactive Web site that guides you through picking a topic, searching the Web, gathering good Internet sites, and turning Web resources into activities appropriate for learners. (Click here to search for examples.)

EdHelper's Math section can create and printout worksheets for you! (Most parts require a subscription- but prices are reasonable.)

Or even better:

Personal Educational Press: This web site lets you turn your computer and printer into a printing press for free educational materials such as:

  • Flashcards
  • BINGO boards
  • Word Scramble
  • Tracing Sheets

A similar site to above that does tracing words is http://www.esl-kids.com/worksheets/worksheets.html  (Great for ESL kids.) Also try: www.aplusmath.com  some great resources for math including printing worksheets for free!

Discovery Education has a lot of nice teacher resources.

Fact Monster is a fun resource for kids

Shodor Interactive Math Activities

Power Proof Reading is a great tool for English skills by grade level (Gr 2-8...but could be used in higher grades.) (Need flash player installed... it is under your start menu under Internet.)

Spellingcity.com is an excellent site for spelling bee preparation. Also includes a great "Teach Me" function that spells out the word using visual and auditory input to improve retention.

Awesome web based site for multimedia editing tools. http://aviary.com/  Includes a tool similar to audacity, for editing audio files, but does it online through a web browser. Snip any song into a smaller sound clip or ring tone, using the cutmp3.net website. (It's a nice online mp3 cutter.)

Animoto  Is a great site for creating videos from pictures! OR  Stupeflix: http://studio.stupeflix.com/Free tool--very much like Animoto--you can pay to download high quality versions of the video.

Learn how to store and edit photos online. Here is a list of available resources.

and...

For online movie and video editing try Pixorial.  (What photoshop.com is to pictures, pixorial.com is for video.) Gives you 10 gig online and up to 800 meg file uploads.

Finding information on the web:  Using the Norris Searching links page, we will look at how to find information on the web. Each participant will evaluate one of the search resources and present their findings to the class. Remember... not all information on the web is good information. -- A short side step... A cause we should all be concerned about!

Some fun links to start the day:

sites for students and teachers with Inquiring minds:

How stuff works - This site has answers to the more general questions like "How does a CD-Player work?" It also has quite a few pictures.

How things work - This site, Hosted by the University of Virginia, this page answers lots of specific questions about all kinds of devices in an easy understandable way. 

BrainPop-- Has small flash-like movies explaining many topics. (Great for Younger kids.) (Small fee to see all movies....but some free ones are still available.)

The Visible Human Project  A nice anatomy site!

Tech Topics....  What causes Earthquakes? Why does my heart beat? What is an electron? Ever wonder about this stuff? Well, TechTopics is here is bring it all together for you. We started with a bunch of cool exhibits from TheTech, found links to other places, and created activities and projects to help explain things. Now you can explore science right at your desk! They also have some other great online tools and exhibits.

Putting your classroom or activities calendar online- You can check out these resources if you like.

PowerMediaPlus is a similar site. These videos are available to all ESU 4-5-6 schools free of charge. (Fee is paid by the ESU.) Contact your media specialist or technology coordinator to get a log-in.  
---There are some other sites, but you must pay for a subscription. ... 
Download videos from Discovery education.  Formally United Streaming and Digital Curriculum.  (These are pay sites that your district must subscribe too.) We will not demo these in class.

Handout on converting Youtube and other Flash videos to video files. (Word format)

We like the DVD Video Soft downloader and suite.  (At Norris on the O drive: O:\You_tube_vid_info)

Some online converters:

Media Converter - Convert up to five videos per day up to 100 mb each using the FREE version, this site allows you to convert online video for use in other applications.  A premium version is also available.  OR  ZamZar will convert files from one format to another online and free.  FIVE Stars for this site!

Just an interesting site with videos on the future of technology, etc.... TED.COM  Check out the video on the new touch screen technology...  or how to make a touch screen from a Wii Remote..... along with many other interesting topics.

Access Excellence has a great site on Biology and Education Check out the Visual Library.

Most of are familiar with Google Maps, but not everyone knows about Google Street View.  (Other mapping and Geography links are on our Norris Geography Page.)

The CIA World Fact Book has a wealth of information on countries and excellent maps.

Discovery Works -- Has some nice science links and virtual fieldtrips.

Pete's PowerPoint Station --One of the best for Great PowerPoints already made for you!  A five star site!!!

A great sign language site!  It even shows you how to sign using video clips!

States and Capitals --http://www.50states.com/

FunSchool's site has many great educational games. States and Capitals Game-- A nice game for practicing Capitals.(Is timed.) They also have a nice drag and drop game.  This K-1 game Lets you drag and drop the states to their location.

Free resources from the Government (Nice site.)  Check out the section on just the constitution.
