Norris Elementary Library Media Program

The Library Media Program at Norris Elementary provides services for all staff and students, preschool through grade 4. Kindergarten students visit the library for 30 minutes once every six days.  Students in grades 1-4 attend Library once every six days for 25 minutes. Students visit the library in their “Specials” rotation.

Research in the media centers is a K-12 focus.  At the elementary levels, research activities are collaboratively planned by the classroom teachers and the media specialist.  Students are also given instruction on use of the card catalog.

The ten Nebraska Golden Sower Award Nominees are read aloud to students in grades kindergarten through third.  Students vote for their favorite book. The winner is then chosen by the children of Nebraska and announced in May.

The Library Media Center strives to maintain a collection that supports the curricular needs of the students and staff and also provides appropriate recreational reading opportunities. The Elementary Library Media Center has a very strong collection that contains over 20,000 books for students and staff.

Assistance is provided to staff as well as to students.  The media staff assists teachers in locating appropriate materials, methods, and equipment to enhance learning opportunities in classes.

The media staff strives to provide a reading culture throughout the Norris District.  We play an active role in a variety of literacy-related events on an annual basis, including Scholastic Book Fairs in the Fall and Spring, National Children’s Book Week and Read Across America, celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

Norris Elementary was privileged to host visits from nationally known children’s book authors Shelley Gill, Stephen Swinburne and Jerry Pallotta.  Children’s book author Helen Ketteman will visit Norris Elementary in the fall of 2008. Profits from our QSP Magazine Renewal Campaign and Book Fairs support the visiting author program at Norris Elementary.
