Sophomore Composition

This class focuses on formal expository writing as well as proper formatting according to MLA format.

Focus on expository writing as it coincides with literature expands students' understanding of literature.

 

Vocabulary Terms-Students have 150 vocabulary terms to learn over the course of the year.  The first semester students are responsible for 75 vocabulary terms they will be quizzed over every other Friday.  There is a vocabulary final at the end of each semester

            *Study words in small chunks often for the most efficient way to learn large amounts of information.  Create your own crossword to help you study!

Required summer curriculum prior to entering English 10 Pre AP.  A printable version of the required reading and writing list.

    1.  Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story musical-

        *read and complete 'Reading Check' and 'For Study and Discussion' questions

        *complete a five paragraph comparison paper on Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story  focusing on comparisons between characters and scenes

    2.  The Odyssey

        *read and complete 'Reading Check' and 'For Study and Discussion' questions

   3.  To Kill a Mockingbird

           *read and complete study guide

   4.  poetry research and power-point
