The Odyssey We begin this year with the ancient story of Odysseus trying to make it home after the ten years' battle of the Trojan War. I know what you're thinking: BORING. Why do English teachers always make us read stuff from thousands of years ago that has no relevance to our own lives? I would understand this argument a little more if you have never watched a Disney film, Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia series, Percy Jackson, the list goes on and on. What do these movies/books have to do with The Odyssey? It's the Hero's Journey, which is a story as old as all stories. We'll be comparing the travels of Odysseus with modern day tales. You'll have the chance to create your own Hero's Tale to show how well you understand the format that Homer used to tell The Odyssey. |
