Joseph Hornung-Scherr
Subject Area: English
Home Town:
Hastings, NE
Year you entered the teaching profession: 1994
Degrees Held & Institution Received From:
Hastings College, B.A.; Doane College, M.A.
Former School Districts:
Stromsburg (1994-1996); Lincoln Northeast (1996-2001) I spent
seven years as a
stay-at-home dad before returning to teaching in 2008.
Favorite thing about teaching: I am excited to be around
the positive energy of a school. Teachers have the opportunity to help
students get their lives started on the right track. It is an awesome and
rewarding responsibility.
Extra Duty Assignments: Although I have coached
cross country, track and basketball in the past, I am currently not coaching at
Norris.
Family: My wife, Heidi, is an attorney in
Lincoln. Our kids are all in grade school at Norris. Our son Sawyer is in third
grade; our son Seneca is in second grade; and our daughter Sadie is in
first grade.
Hobbies/Interest Areas: Most of my extra time is spent
working on our old farm house and acreage east of Hickman. I also like to run,
play basketball, do crossword puzzles, read, and spend time with my family. I am
an irrational St. Louis Cardinals fan , and have spent far too much of my life fixated
on Husker football.
Family in education: I am proud to be one of
many educators in my family. My mom, Jan Scherr, is a
retired school nurse (Hastings Public Schools/ESU 9) who currently substitutes
for the Omaha Public Schools. My dad, Steve Scherr, is a former teacher and
coach; he also
served on the Nebraska State Board of Education as well as the Hastings Public
Schools Board of
Education. My grandfather, Art Scherr, taught and coached for many years at Boys Town High
School. My mother-in-law, Jane Hornung, taught at Arnold Public School before
becoming superintendent of Paxton Consolidated School District. She is currently superintendent at the
Arthur Public Schools and serves on the Board of Governors of Mid-Plains
Community College.
