Norris Elementary, Kindergarten

Everyday we have calendar time where many Math concepts are included.  Students are beginning to learn the routine and are enjoying the songs we sing everyday to learn the days of the week.  They enjoy counting, learning about the weather and graphing.  We make predictions and we know that it doesn't matter if we are right or wrong, it only matters if we try.  When we try we get smarter.  We read out schedule every day and check our Morning Message to see what will be happening during the day.  We begin to learn about seasons.  During our calendar time we find lots of numbers on our one hundreds chart and then we find the number before it and after it.

In AUGUST we begin working on patterning.  We learn the different patterns of colors and shapes.  We also count and work on numeral recognition and number writing.  We also begin learning about geometric shapes.  In kindergarten we like them to master the basic four shapes:  circle, square, rectangle,  and triangle.  Students learn to recognize and match shapes and then look at real objects and discover what shape they are. Kindergarteners also practice drawing shapes and making pictures with shapes.

SEPTEMBER-  In September we begin learning about sorting and classifying.  They learn about same and different and how to sort by color, shape and size.  Students learn about AB patterns.  They copy, extend and make new patterns.  We learn to identify and write numbers to 12 and practice counting to 25.

OCTOBER-  In October we count by ones to 100 and count by fives and tens to 100.  We count backward from 20 and learn to skip count by twos.  We compare equal and unequal sets and start working on the number that comes before, after, and between a number.  We also begin learning about estimation and working on ABB patterns.

NOVEMBER-  We are ready to start learning about addition.

DECEMBER-  We are ready for ABC patterns.  We will read and write numbers to 10 and count to 50.

JANUARY-  Now that we are ready to begin a new year we are ready to begin subtraction.

FEBRUARY-  We will learn place value and read and write numbers to 100.

MARCH-  We are now ready to tell time to the hour and half hour.  We are ready for measurement of length, weight and capacity.

APRIL-  It is money month.  Students will learn about a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter.  They will count coins and play a money game.

MAY-  We will learn about the fractions one-half, one-third, and one-fourth.  We will also review many of the concepts we have learned already.

Number Poems

Down to the left, and up like a hero

That’s the way to make a 0.

Pull straight down, and then you’re done,

That’s the way to make a 1.

Up and around and choo, choo, choo,

That’s the way to make a 2.

Around the tree, around the tree,

That’s the way to make a 3.

Pull straight down and over some more,

Pull straight down, it’s the number 4.

Pull straight down, around and alive,

Give it a hat to make a 5.

Pull down and around until it kicks,

That’s the way to make a 6.

Across the sky and down from heaven,

That’s the way to make a 7.

Make an S and shut the gate,

That’s the way to make an 8.

Circle at the top and down with a line,

That’s the way to make a 9.

Pull straight down and a zero again,

That’s the way to make a 10.
