10 at 10:00 and 10 at 2:00 Norris receives Bronze recognition as a Alliance for a Healthier Generation elementary school!!!!!!! We are working together as a team to create healthy lifelong choices for our staff and students. It is very exciting to see all the additional physical activity implemented into the school day. Brain research supports additional "P. A." minutes as an indicator to greater academic success in school. The wonderful walking path donated by our PTO has really been used as students are encouraged to walk/run/skip... the path several times throughout the day. We are creating healthier menus for our students and our Health curriculum has been enhanced to educate all students on living a longer healthier life. In addition, we have implemented fun "First Saturday" (on the first Saturday of each month) events in which we invite families to come to school and actively engage in walking/running and participating in obstacle course activities in a fun filled non competitive environment. As a result of this, I invite parents ( grandparents) to be our Mystery Hero and lead us in an "active activity" during our Friday 10 at 10 or 10 at 2 time. This is a non threatening environment (your audience is 5 and 6 year olds). You may lead calisthenics, dance, yoga, resistance exercises, etc. A sign up for this will be available during Open House festivities. Please check out the Alliance for a Healthier generation website at www.HealthierGeneration.org.
Specials 12:35-1:15
The Love of Reading! Library Day is on the Day 2 rotation from 12:20-12:50. Mrs. Holly Gifford is the Norris Elementary media specialist. She reads aloud to the children each week and introduces various library and reading concepts. In addition, your child is invited to check out a book. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring home a new book weekly. Please encourage your son or daughter to have the book and book bag back on or before library day each week.
Language with Ms.Droge is on Day 1 and Day 6. The children are exposed to cultures, languages, and geography of places all over the world.
P.E. is on the Day 2, and Day 4 . Mr. Gary Pence leads the children in discovering fun and informative ways to keep fit through exercise. Many days he invites the children to leave the gymnasium for outside play. Please have tennis shoes and a jacket/coat ready for this occasion. Art is on Day 5. Mrs. Patty Elwood shares her talent and encourages creativity in the "real" art room.
