Are you happy?  H-A-P-P-Y!!!!  Happy Birthday!!! Birthdays are special for children.  Your child is welcome to have visitors to celebrate his/her special day. We enjoy having a book read to the class or a guest may lead our 10 at 10 activity (see details below.) Norris is proud to be a part of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.  As a result, we are encouraging healthy birthday choices (fruits and vegetables)  or non edible treats (pencils, erasers, etc.) or donating a book to the class library in your child's name. Children with summer birthdays may celebrate on the half year date or when it works best for the family.  We have 23 children and three adults in the classroom.  A Birthday Bag will come home on or near your child’s birthday.  It has books to read, coloring activities, a writing activity, and a special treat.  Please return the Birthday Bag to school the following day.

10 at 10:00 and 10 at 2:00  Norris  receives Bronze recognition as a  Alliance for a Healthier Generation elementary school!!!!!!!  We are working together as a team to create healthy lifelong choices for our staff and students.  It is very exciting to see all the additional physical activity implemented into the school day.  Brain research supports additional "P. A." minutes as an indicator to greater academic success in school.  The wonderful walking path donated by our PTO has really been used as students are encouraged to walk/run/skip... the path several times throughout the day.  We are creating healthier menus for our students and our Health curriculum has been enhanced to educate all students on living a longer healthier life.  In addition, we have implemented fun "First Saturday" (on the first Saturday of each month) events in which we invite families to come to school and actively engage in walking/running and participating in obstacle course activities in a fun filled non competitive environment.  As a result of this, I invite parents ( grandparents) to be our Mystery Hero and lead us in an "active activity" during our Friday 10 at 10 or 10 at 2 time. This is a non threatening environment (your audience is 5 and 6 year olds).  You may lead calisthenics, dance, yoga, resistance exercises, etc. A sign up for this will be available during Open House festivities. Please check out the Alliance for a Healthier generation website at www.HealthierGeneration.org.

The Love of Reading!  Library Day is on the Day 2  rotation from 12:20-12:50.  Mrs. Holly Gifford is the Norris Elementary media specialist.  She reads aloud to the children each week and introduces various library and reading concepts. In addition, your child is invited to check out a book. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring home a new book weekly.  Please encourage your son or daughter to have the book and book bag back on or before library day each week.

Language with Ms.Droge is on Day 1 and Day 6.  The children are exposed to cultures, languages, and geography of places all over the world.

Music to My Ears!   We meet for music class on the Day 3 and Day 6 rotation.   Mrs. Annette Mitchell leads the children in singing ,rhyme, and rhythm.

P.E. is on the Day 2, and Day 4 .  Mr. Gary Pence leads the children in discovering fun and informative ways to keep fit through exercise. Many days he invites the children to leave the gymnasium for outside play. Please have tennis shoes and a jacket/coat ready for this occasion.

Art is on Day 5.  Mrs. Patty Elwood shares her talent and encourages creativity in the "real" art room.

Sharing or “show and tell” is an opportunity for your child to share items we are learning about in school.  The sharing of toys is not encouraged.  Items “discovered” in nature or other topics designed to teach provide an opportunity for public speaking and learning. Look for the "letter of the week" for ideas for sharing opportunities. The following, is your child’s Show and Tell Day.  A letter will go home prior to our start of "sharing" time.  In addition, a reminder letter will be sent home in Thursday Folders.

Mystery Reader is an opportunity for the students to get to know other special adult friends.  It invites the adult to share a “delicious tasting" book with the class.  I am happy to assist you in choosing a selection or you may bring your own favorite.  There is a Mystery Reader sign up during Open House.  If you miss that opportunity, please know you are always welcome.  I plan to have the adult mystery reader choose a day during his or her child’s Super Kid Week.  As always if this time does not work please let me know.  In addition, I will fill open dates with staff members and other special readers so we have a M-Y-S -T-E-R-Y Reader each week.

Super Kid

Each and every one of your children are S-U-P-E-R!  However, to foster an opportunity to let your child shine, each week a new student will be invited to be our Super Kid of the Week.  During your child’s week a special backpack, letter, and journal will travel home with him or her. The following is our Super Kid schedule.  Please mark your calendars for your “super" kid’s turn.
