Norris Titan Freshman Football Team Finish the Year 4-3
The young Titans opened the season at Elkhorn August 30 with a 28-0 loss. The
Antlers scored first on the opening kickoff and converted the extra point. On
the following kickoff a Titan fumble was recovered by Elkhorn on the Norris 20
yard line. A few plays later they scored on a run and converted the extra point.
The rest of the half found the teams in a defensive struggle. Norris threatened
twice but was unable to come away with any points. The half ended with a score
of 14-0 in the Antlers favor.
In the second half Elkhorn was able to score twice making the final score 28-0.
Pius X came to the home field September 4. At half time they lead 28 – 0. The
second half found the Titans showing some offense. Nick Sass scored on a pass
from Tyler Kvasnicka and Luke Seckman ran in a touchdown. The score ended at
28-12 giving the Titans a 0-2 record.
The Titans were soon to get in the win column when the Beatrice Orangeman came
to town on September 13. On the Titans second drive Tyler Merry scored on a pass
from Ben Kruger. The try for a two point conversion failed. Beatrice came back
to score on their drive and the score was 6-6. Luke Seckman ran back the
following kickoff and was also on the end of pass from Kruger for the two point
conversion. But, once again Beatrice answered on their next drive scoring on a
pass and converted on their extra point tying the score at 14 all. Before the
half was over Ben Kruger found the end zone on a quarterback sweep. The score at
half time was Norris 20 Beatrice 14. In the second half Norris took control of
the game. The defense stiffened up and the offense went wild. Nick Sass was on
the receiving end of a touchdown pass from Ben Kruger to make the score 26- 14.
Luke Seckman ran in another touchdown later in the 3rd quarter and Austin
Granatowicz scored the two point conversion on a pass from Tyler Kvasnicka to
make the score 34 -14. The final scoring in the 4th quarter was when Ben Kruger
intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touch down. Beau Bryant scored the two
point conversion. The final score was Norris 42- Beatrice 14.
On September 27 the Titans evened their record with a win over the Waverly
Vikings at Viking Field. Beau Bryant scored in the first quarter to make the
half time score 6-0. Waverly received the second half kickoff and drove the
football down to the five yard line. With the help of a five yard penalty, the
Titan defense put together a goal line stand. Tyler Kvasnicka tackled the
Waverly runner behind the line and on the next play Will Cox hit the quarterback
causing a fumble that was recovered by Chris Velander. The Titans were
determined to come out the second half and run the football. The Titans took
over on the Waverly 20 yard line. With some great blocking from the line and
tough running from the Norris backs, Austin Granatowicz scored several plays
later. Austin also scored the extra point making the score 14 – 0. The opening
of the fourth quarter found the Titans on the Waverly 47 yard line. On the first
play tight end Alex Doeschot was on the receiving end of a touch down pass
thrown by Ben Kruger making the final score 20-0.
The young Titans win streak would continue on as they defeated the Nebraska City
Pioneers in Titan Stadium October 4. Rushing touchdowns were scored by Beau
Bryant, Cody Sullivan, and Ben Kruger. Buzz Kaplan scored on a 19 yard pass from
Ben Kruger. Zach Tebo kicked an extra point and Beau Bryant scored a two pint
conversion on a pass from Ben Kruger. The Titans also forced a safety on the
Pioneers making the final score 29-0.
The Titans traveled to Doane Tiger Stadium October 9 to take on the Crete
Cardinal Freshman. Crete scored two touchdowns, ran in both extra points and
forced a safety on the Titans in the first half. Tyler Merry scored on a
touchdown in the second quarter making the half time score 18-6 Crete’s favor.
Tyler had a great game rushing the ball and throughout the game the Titans had
opportunities to score but could not cash in. The final score stood at 18-6. The
Titan record was even at 3-3.
The final game was a home stand against the Plattsmouth Blue Devils October 16.
The rain had stopped long enough to let the field at Titan Stadium dry out so
the game could be played. The first half found the teams fighting a defensive
battle in the mud and the score board read 0-0 at halftime. In the second half
the Titans started running the ball to the outside and moved down the field.
Luke Seckman scored on a 5 yard run. The extra point failed. A turning point in
the game would be a third quarter interception by Clint Mitchell which stopped a
Blue Devil drive. In the fourth quarter Alex Doeschot’s number was called but
this time it was Tyler Kvasnicka throwing the pass to Alex which resulted in the
2nd touch down for the Titans. The two point conversion was successful as Buzz
Kaplan was able to make a fantastic grab and keep his feet in bounds on
Kvasnicka’s pass. The final score was 14-0 in favor of the Titans. Ensuring a
winning season of 4 wins and 3 losses.
This was a great year for the young Titans. There were 35 members of the team
and all of them contributed. The offensive line of Collin Mach, Connor Dudley,
Nick Gollin, Devan Bouwnes, Zach Tebo and Tanner Krogman improved with each
game. On defense Luke Seckman, Will Cox, Austin Granatowicz, and Caleb Blythe,
turned in some strong performances through out the year. Coaches for the
freshman team were veteran coach Sid Conrad, Jack Jenkins and Aaron Pryor.
