What is Language?

"Language" is a code made up of rules which help individuals to communicate.  Language can be divided into two areas:  Receptive Language and Expressive Language.  Receptive Language is how a person understands language through reading and listening.  Expressive Language is how a person uses language through speaking and writing.  Within both Receptive Language and Expressive Language there are three components including semantics, morphology and pragmatics.

Semantics is the acquisition and understanding of the meaning of words.  Semantics is generally associated with vocabulary.  This component of language is vital with reading comprehension, listening skills, speaking and writing skills.  Semantics is also involved in figurative language, multiple meaning words, idioms and metaphors.

Morphology is the rules of "syntax".  Morphology refers to correct grammar usage.  It is also involved in the prefixes and suffixes of words which can change how a word should be used.

Pragmatics refers to the "social use" of language.  Pragmatics is actually using language.  Pragmatic skills are used when involved in conversations and social interactions.
