Internet Safety

It is important that you talk with your parents and together set up rules for going online. Some of the rules may include the time of day that you can be online, the length of time you can be online, and the appropriate sites you are allowed to visit. Here are some general rules you should follow to be safe while you are online.

1. Obey all of the safety rules your parents/guardians have for you about how you use the internet. Your parents want to make sure you’re safe online, so please listen to them when they ask you not to visit inappropriate sites.

2. Understand that some people online pretend to be someone else. Sometimes they pretend to be kids, when they’re really grown-ups. I will tell my parents about people I meet online. I will also tell my parents before I exchange any e-mail with new people I meet online.

3. Do not give out personal information to anyone. Never tell anyone on the Internet what your real name is, where you live, your age, your school, your parent’s names, where they work, when you leave for school or get home, or any information that can be used to identify who you are and where you live. Never tell anyone where you go to school, where you live, or any other details like school team names or school mascot names.

4. Do not send anyone your photograph or a photo of anyone else in your family. Do not send photos of your house or your parent’s car, or any other personal items that can possibly be used to identify you or where you live.

5. Do not respond to anyone who writes mean, nasty, or rude things, or to anyone who uses curse words or profanity. If someone says something that makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, tell your parents or guardians right away so that they can contact your online service or internet service provider. Your parents can call the Cyber Tip line (1-800-843-5678) to report inappropriate or suspicious online activities.

6. Never agree to get together with someone you meet online without first checking with your parents or guardians. If you parents agree to the meeting, make sure that your parents or guardians go with you and that the meeting is in a public place.

7. Never send e-mail to people you don’t know without checking it out with your family first.

8. Never tell a stranger your e-mail address. Never, never tell anyone, even a friend, your computer or e-mail password.

9. Never accept or open e-mail or files from strangers!!!

10. Never go to a website that costs money unless you have your parents’ permission. Do not buy or order anything online or give out any credit card information without asking your parents.

11. Do not fill out any form online that asks for any information about yourself or your family.

12. Do not get into arguments or fights online. If someone tries to start an argument or fight with you, don’t answer them and inform your parents.

13. Do not keep online secrets from your parents or guardians.

14. I will not call anyone I met online without parent/guardian permission.

15. If someone asks me to do something I am not supposed to do, I will tell my parents or guardians immediately.

16. I will never send anything to anyone I met online, unless my parents say it’s okay.  If anyone I met online sends me anything, I will tell my parents/guardians.

17. I will not use something I found online and pretend it’s mine…that’s plagiarism.

18. I will practice safe computing, and check for viruses whenever I borrow a disk from someone or download something from the Internet.
