Fairness
Fairness involves avoiding prejudice, seeking justice, and playing by the rules. People who are fair understand that each person is valuable and deserves to have an equal chance. Learning to share and cooperate with others is a big part of becoming a fair person. The Golden Rule, "Treat others as you wish to be treated," is all about being fair. Fair people don't take more than their share, don't take advantage of others, and don't blame others for something they didn't do. People who are fair are careful when making judgments about others. They try to listen impartially and hear the facts with an open mind before forming opinions.
Parents may reinforce fairness at home by:
Not interrupting others when they are speaking. Wait until they finish before you speak.
Treating people as individuals, rather than as part of a group.
Doing your share of chores at home.
Playing games by the rules and making sure the same rules apply to everyone
Giving your child the opportunity to have a voice in family decisions whenever possible.
Listening carefully to your child's explanation of a situation before jumping to conclusions about what happened.
Making an effort to treat all your children equitably. This will have a lasting impact on their relationships with you and with one another.
