This is our first year using our new math series. We have adopted the Saxon Math program for our school. Saxon teaches math in a different way than programs we have used up until now. It uses a "spiraling" approach that over time will introduce and revisit concepts over and over. This is a departure from most other series, which develop one concept at a time and move on. Homework is included because brain research shows that when ideas are revisited after a 4-hour window, it helps to place the information into long term memory. The homework pages may seem easy because they are designed for success. They mirror the classroom practice done together earlier in the day to reinforce each lesson. This is so there won't be the problem of not understanding the assignment and thus practicing "wrong". Much of each lesson involves "math talk" and helping students move to higher level thinking by verbalizing what they are doing. They learn to explain not just what the answer is, but how they got it. The lessons focus on developing number sense, concepts and problem solving skills, building a foundation for greater success down the road.
