Celebrate Learning in

Fifth Grade:

 

In Fifth Grade we celebrate learning and encourage each child to develop to his or her fullest potential through a variety of experiences.

 

Reading:  Our reading series is divided into six units.  Each unit provides instruction and practice in the following areas:

Reading Strategies :

  • Comprehension

  • Reading Strategies

  • Decoding Longer Words 

  • Vocabulary

  • Spelling

  • Grammar

  • Writing

  • Listening/Speaking

  • Information and Study Skills

Writing:  Writing is a vital component of our language arts curriculum.  Students learn grammar, usage and editing skills as they write.  Forms of writing might include:

  • Persuasive Writing

  • Explanatory Writing

  • Personal Narrative

  • Reports

  • Paragraphs

  • Poetry

  • Research Papers

Science:  The science program is divided into four concentration areas:

  • The Scientific Process

  • The Human Body

  • Force and Motion

  • Rocks and Minerals

Computers:  Fifth graders will be given opportunities to use the computer lab for keyboarding practice, word processing, and problem solving and tutorial programs. 

 

Social Studies:  Fifth graders study American history.  The year is divided into six units:

  • Early Americans

  • The Explorers

  • The American Colonies

  • The Revolutionary War

  • The New Nation/Government

  • The Westward Movement

  • The Civil War

Mathematics:  Fifth graders have several objectives they must meet in math:

  • Place value to the billions

  • Add and subtract up to 7 digits

  • Multiply 3 digits by 2 digits

  • Divide 4 digits by 2 digits

  • Add and Subtract fractions with like denominators

  • Multiply fractions

  • Read, write, and utilize decimals through one-hundredths

  • Add and subtract decimals to the one-hundredths

  • Define basic geometric terminology

NewsBowl:  We participate in a current events program called NewsBowl.  Each week the students play a game in a format similar to Jeopardy with questions related to:

  • World News

  • National News

  • Social Problems

  • Nebraska

  • Arts

  • Sports

  • People, Places, and Things

  • Miscellaneous

Students in the fifth grade participate in a variety of experiences.  Cooperative groups, discussion groups, projects, manipulatives, and student investigations all are a vital part of their learning.  We appreciate parental support in helping to make your child's education a priority.
