TITLE

Speech and Theater 7

TEXTBOOK

Communication, An Introduction to Speech, Allyn and Bacon, 1988.

DESCRIPTION

This exciting and performance - based class is part of the seventh grade exploratory seven week block. Every seventh grade student participates in this course which stresses the basics of speech communication and theater.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Students will understand the importance and variety of speech communications in today's society.
2. Students will develop awareness of themselves as participants of speech communications.
3. Students will learn practical techniques for listening.
4. Students will use their imaginations to respond spontaneously with their mind, body, and voice.
5. Students will create characters vocally and nonverbally.
6. Students will learn basic technical theater terminology.
7. Students will study basic terminology including areas of a stage, body positions on stage, and mechanical parts of a stage.

WRITING ACTIVITIES

1. Students will write an effective introduction for an informative speech.
2. Students will write an effective conclusion for an informative speech.
3. Students will construct a logical outline for an informative speech.
4. Students will write a dramatic scene which incorporates all the areas of the stage.
5. Students will complete a written evaluation of another student's scene.
6. Students will perform a group written theatrical production.

MULTICULTURE ACTIVITIES

1. As a study of speech/theater, students observe a video production of Bill Cosby, while focusing on:

A. Paralanguage skills, which include: volume, tone, rate, pitch, and stress.
B. Creating a character through the use of body and voice.
C. Observe organizational process of ideas.
