DESCRIPTION

 

      The fifth grade program is much like that of the fourth grade program except for a slightly          increased time for sport skills.  A wide variety of sport skills are introduced so that each student           experiences success and improvement.  Emphasis is on form and technique.  The relationship            between fitness and good health is stressed to the student.  It is hoped that the student has acquired       skill and has experienced enough success to want to continue to be active in fitness and sports.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

1.           Students will participate in aerobic running activities.

2.           Students will participate in a volleyball unit, stressing refinement of skills and fundamentals.

3.           Students will participate in a basketball unit, with emphasis on shot development and ball 

              handling.

4.           Students will be exposed to basic track and field events.

5.           Students will participate in exercise circuits and obstacle course challenges.

6.           Students will participate in aerobics, dance, and movement.

7.           Students will work on advanced manipulatives.

8.           Students will participate in vigorous games and activities that aid in the development of the

              entire body.

9.           Students will learn the importance of cooperation, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

10.         Students will begin to understand the connection between exercise and good health.

 

WRITING ACTIVITIES

 

1.          Students will do various writings on topics related to nutrition.

2.          Students will do various writings on topics related to fitness.

3.          Students will do various writings on topics related to self-esteem.

 

MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES

 

1.           Students will observe hallway poster displays of athletes from various cultures to serve as role

             models.

2.           Students will experience nonsexist, unbiased, non-derogatory language in the physical education

             classroom.

3.           Students will learn the cultural origins of games and activities.
