COURSE DESCRIPTION
Health 8 is a nine-week, required course for all 8th grade students. The primary
focus of the course will be to teach responsible decision-making in regard to
(1) alcohol, drugs, and tobacco and (2) human sexuality. Teaching techniques and
methods will emphasize the benefits of abstinence in making decisions about
drugs and sexual behavior.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. Students will study the implications of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco use/abuse
upon the individual and society.
2. Students will study the reproductive system and the emotional and physical
changes of adolescence.
3. Students will study responsible behavior including attitudes, feelings,
self-esteem and respect, respect for others, respect for family members, and
societal influences.
4. Students will become knowledgeable about decision making skills, refusal
skills, and reacting appropriately to peer pressure.
5. Students will learn about relations with members of the opposite sex,
including friendship, infatuation, dating, love, and marriage.
6. Students will become acquainted with the statistics of teenage pregnancy and
the impact of teenage pregnancy upon the individual and society.
7. Students will study fetal development from conception, through birth.
8. Students will learn about sexually transmitted diseases.
WRITING ACTIVITIES
1. Students will write responses to workbook activities.
2. Students will write a personal goal.
3. Students will write responses to three quizzes given during the quarter.
4. Students will take notes on student sexually transmitted disease
presentations.
5. Students will brainstorm a list of advantages/disadvantages of their birth
order in their family.
6. Students will write an advertisement using one of the seven advertisement
techniques presented.
MULTICULTURE ACTIVITIES
1. Materials used in Health class will be unbiased and provide an accurate
portrayal of diverse groups.
2. All students will receive instruction regardless of race.
3. All students shall appreciate cultural differences in family structures and
customs.
