DESCRIPTION
This is an elective course for all eighth grade students. The class meets daily
for 44 minute class periods. There are no pre-requisites for this class. In this
vocal performance class, a variety of music literature will be studied. Singing
skills, music fundamentals, performance skills, and areas related to music
appreciation will be studied. Students will perform in approximately two to
three public concerts and clinics.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. Students will demonstrate proper posture and techniques of choral singing.
2. Students will perform unison and two and three part choral literature in
homophonic and polyphonic styles.
3. Students will perform choral literature in a variety of genres and historical
styles.
4. Students will perform in two public concerts.
5. Students will evaluate their performances and the performances of others.
6. Students will demonstrate proper concert performance decorum and audience
etiquette.
7. Students will study the elements of music – melody, harmony, rhythm, tone
color, and form.
8. Students will have the opportunity to perform as soloists.
9. Students will describe the relationships between music, other disciplines,
history, and cultures.
10. Students will demonstrate beginning sight-singing skills.
WRITING ACTIVITIES
1. Students will describe music heard using an appropriate vocabulary.
2. Students will define and use appropriate working music vocabulary.
3. Students will write evaluations of musical performances.
4. Students will present course work in a written portfolio.
MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES
1. Students will perform music from a variety of cultures.
2. Students will perform music in languages other than English.
