Music Appreciation 7

DESCRIPTION
This course is a part of a 6-week elective rotation block. It alternates with
Art, Speech, Keyboarding, Industrial Tech, LOGO, and Home Economics. In this
course, students will experience a variety of musical topics including a review
of music fundamentals, a study of jazz and popular music, composition, musical
careers, and musical theater.
CATEGORICAL OBJECTIVES
1. Students will answer questions on a quiz based on the basic music
fundamentals and terminology.
2. Students will compose a short eight to ten measure melody using the key of C,
rhythmic patterns of half, quarter, or eighth notes.
2. Students will identify various types of jazz and popular music styles.
3. Students will identify the relationships between the development of
jazz/popular music and the sociological and historical events in 20th Century
American society.
4. Students will describe a variety of music careers and their related job
responsibilities.
5. Students will demonstrate an understanding of proper concert performance
decorum and audience etiquette.
WRITING ACTIVITIES
1. Students will write a paragraph describing what they hear in musical examples
using appropriate musical terminology.
2. Students will write a one-page paper describing the use of music and
theatrics after watching a video of a Broadway musical.
MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES
1. Students will state in their own words the influence of African-American
composers in the development of jazz and popular music.
