DESCRIPTION
Sixth Grade General Music is a required course that alternates on odd and even
days with sixth grade Physical Education throughout the school year. One class
period is 44 minutes in length. There are no pre-requisites for this class.
Topics studied will include choral singing, listening skills, reading and
notating music, and understanding the relationships between music, other
disciplines, history, and culture. Students will also perform in two public
concerts.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. Students will identify the elements of music - melody, harmony, rhythm, tone
color, and form.
2. Students will actively listen to music representing a variety of genres and
historical periods.
3. Students will demonstrate proper postures and techniques of choral singing.
4. Students will perform a variety of unison and two-part choral pieces in
polyphonic and homophonic styles.
5. Students will perform in two public concerts.
6. Students will evaluate their performances and the performances of others.
7. Students will demonstrate proper concert performance decorum and audience
etiquette.
8. Students will describe the relationships between music, other disciplines,
history, and cultures.
9. Students will perform rudimentary keyboard skills.
WRITING ACTIVITIES
1. Students will describe music heard using an appropriate vocabulary.
2. Students will define basic music terminology.
3. Students will compose original verses and stories based on and inspired by
listening to musical selections.
MULTICULTURAL ACTIVITIES
1. Students will listen to the music of a variety of cultures.
2. Students will perform music from a variety of cultures.
