DESCRIPTION

 

Language Arts Communication is integrated throughout the day and required of all fifth grade students.  Students are daily involved in communication activities such as journal writing, outlining of subject material, creative writing, editing, responding to questions both orally and in writing, and discussion of curriculum materials.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

1.             Students will participate in a variety of oral communications (storytelling, dramas, reports, group discussions, and leadership).  (8.3.2)

2.                Students will evaluate own and group responses.  (8.3,2)

3.                   Students will use various basic writing forms such as stories, descriptions, interviews, scripts, newspaper writing, poetry, journals or logs, letter writing, editorials, book reports, and creative writing.  (8.2.4)

4.                Students will use sentences with subject and verb agreement.  (8.2.1)

5.                Students will identify and use prepositions.  (8.2.1)

6.                Students will write dialogue paragraphs using correct punctuation.  (8.2.1)

7.                   Students will write research papers including title page and bibliography.  (8.2.3)

8.                   Students will write expository paragraphs using topic sentences, supporting details, bridging phrases, indentation, and correct punctuation.  (8.2.2) and (8.2.3)

9.                   Students will write stories and develop characters, setting, plot, theme, problem, and solution.

10.                Students will spell assigned words.  (8.2.1)

11.                Students will identify headings and subheadings in reference or content materials.  (8.2.5)

12.                Students will outline information from content areas.  (8.2.5)

MULTICULTURE ACTIVITIES

 

1.                  Students will participate in oral discussions and respond to questions related to multicultural multimedia presentations and literature.

2.                  Students research and report on Native American leaders as a part of their study of American History.
