DESCRIPTION
English 7 is required for all seventh grade students and is part of the core
curriculum block. It meets three days per week for 68 minutes per session.
Students are heterogeneously grouped for all five sections of this course. All
areas of language arts are included: literature, speaking, listening, and
composition. Each component is interwoven with the others, enabling students to
receive a comprehensive perspective of all communication skills. Since seventh
grade students also have a separate reading class in the core curriculum block,
writing skills are emphasized.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. Students will correctly identify the eight parts of speech in selected
writing samples. (8.2.1)
2. Students will use complete sentences in their writing. (8.2.1)
3. Students will edit their writing, using editing symbols to correct their
capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraph structure.

4. Students will correctly spell selected frequently used words and homonyms and
will identify and apply common prefixes, suffixes, roots, and spelling rules.

5. Students will write descriptions, character analyses, research papers,
procedure papers, and creative pieces with a clear focus, logically related
ideas, and adequate supporting detail. (8.2.3)
6. Students will identify common rhyme and rhythm patterns in poetry and
selected well-known poems and poets. (8.1.3)
7. Students will read short stories and myths and will identify in them the
elements of fiction, including character, plot, setting, and theme. (8.1.3)
8. Students will read and write nonfiction, for which they will locate, access,
evaluate, and compile appropriate information. (8.1.2 and 8.1.5)
WRITING ACTIVITIES.
1. Students will keep a writing portfolio in the classroom. The portfolio will
be given to the eighth grade teacher and will be updated throughout their middle
school and high school years.
2. Students will produce on the computer the following kinds of writing:
description, essay test, narrative (events in sequence), paraphrase, persuasive
essay, poetry, procedure paper, research paper, summary, and creative writing.

MULTICULTURE ACTIVITIES
1. Students will study literature from a variety of cultures, including Native
American short stories and myths, Hispanic poetry, African American short
stories and poetry, myths from Africa, and Asian American stories, and Asian
myths.
